Ryan Burkert recorded the Pride's only win of the day as Hofstra dropped a 32-3 non-conference decision to the Bulls of the University at Buffalo at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center Saturday afternoon.
UB posted its second consecutive victory and their seventh win in the last eight outings to improve to 8-4 on the year. The Pride, which dropped their fourth consecutive contest, slips to 5-7 on the year.
Starting the match at 165 pounds, the Bulls of UB captured the first five matches in the contest-all by decision-to build a 15-0 lead at the intermission. At 174, Hofstra freshman
Sage Heller closed to within two at 6-4 after two periods but couldn't get the match-tying takedown in the final period for a 6-4 loss. Red-shirt sophomore
Michael Oxley was also in a close battle at 184 pounds as a third period takedown was the difference in a 3-2 loss to Brett Perry
But UB came back from the break to record a major decision by Kyle Akins over
Jacob Martin at 125 and win by fall at the 3:29 mark of the 133-lb match by Bryan Lantry, who is ranked 19th in the nation, to expand the lead to 25-0.
After the Bulls made it eight straight wins at 141,
Ryan Burkert jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up for the 5-2 victory over Ryan Peters at 149 pounds. Burkert improved to 16-10 on the season. UB's Alex Smythe closed out the match with a major decision victory over
Jake Kaminsky at 157 pounds for the 32-3 final score.
Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, February 4 when the Pride travel to Pennsylvania for Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association contests at Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster at 2 p.m. and at Drexel in Philadelphia at 7 p.m.
