FH: Hofstra Falls To Second-Ranked Syracuse

Hempstead, NY – Senior Claudia Marin Samper scored her second goal of the season for Hofstra but Orange junior Lies Lagerweij scored twice in the contest to lead second-ranked Syracuse to a 5-1 non-conference victory over the Pride at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Syracuse, the defending national champions, improved to 4-0 on the season while Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive game, falls to 1-3.

The Hofstra defense packed it in on defense in the first half, allowing just a Lagerweij goal off a penalty corner in the 26th minute. Syracuse sophomore Roos Weers passed the ball off to Lagerweij off the penalty corner to pick up the assist for a 1-0 lead. The Orange outshot the Pride, 13-1 in the first 35 minutes while Hofstra junior goalie Carys Swan made seven first half saves to keep the deficit at one.

The Orange made it 2-0 just 4:18 into the second half as Weers notched her second of the season, off a penalty corner, with graduate-student Elaine Carey and sophomore Jennifer Bleakney assisting.

Marin Samper reduced the Hofstra deficit to 2-1 just six minutes later, picking up a rebound of a shot from Madison Sauve and slipping it past Syracuse graduate goalie Lucy Camlin (4 saves). It was Marin Samper's second goal of the year.

Junior Laura Hurff would give the Orange some breathing room with a bullet from near the top of the circle for her first goal of the year at the 50:19 mark. Carey would boost the Syracuse lead to 4-1 in the 56th minute with her third goal of the year off a pass from senior Emma Lamison. Lagerweij would close out the scoring just 3:53 from the end with a backhand bullet from near the top of the arc.

Hofstra was outshot in the contest, 33-7. Syracuse had eight penalty corners to one for the Pride. Hofstra goalie Carys Swan added seven saves in the second half to finish with a career-high 14 saves.

The Pride now head out for a two-game road trip beginning next Friday night when they face the Pioneers of Sacred Heart at Yale University. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Hofstra will face Yale in New Haven on Sunday, September 11 at 2 p.m.
