VB: Hofstra Closes Rebel Challenge With Win Over Sacramento State

Las Vegas, NV – Senior Veronika Kostova and freshman Laura Masciullo tied for match-high honors with 16 kills and junior Leticia Valente added 14 kills as the Hofstra Volleyball team concluded play at the UNLV Rebel Challenge with a four-set victory over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Luisa Domingues tallied a career-best 26 digs in the match for Hofstra.

Set scores were 29-27, 21-25, 26-24 and 25-23 in favor of the Pride.

Hofstra improved to 5-2 with the win, while the Hornets fell to 3-3.

Both squads started off hot offensively in the opening stanza as both hit over .300 in the set. The set would go into "overtime" with Hofstra finally able to put the Hornets away with the 29-27 win.

After Sacramento State tied the contest up at one with a four-point win in the second set, Hofstra would use back-to-back close set victories to earn the win in the match. The defense was the key in the third set as the Pride held the Hornets to a .139 attack percentage en route to the win.

In the final set, Hofstra used a 4-0 run to take a 20-16 lead as Valente had a pair of kills during the spurt. The Pride would continue to lead and after Sacramento State cut the deficit to one, 23-22, Hofstra got kills from Kostova and sophomore Nanishka Perez to eventually put an end to the match.

Freshman Luisa Sydlik posted her second double-double of the season with 39 assists and 12 digs.

Mikaela Noetti had 16 kills for Sacramento State, while Shannon Boyle posted 15 kills and 21 digs. Kennedy Kurtz tallied 49 assists and seven digs.

Hofstra is back in action next weekend when it takes part in the Syracuse Tournament. The Pride will face Syracuse, Siena and #13 Penn State.
