Bronx, N.Y. – A goal and an assist from senior
Jill Mulholland helped Hofstra women's soccer snap Fordham's four-game win streak Sunday afternoon at Jack Coffey Field as the Pride took a 2-1 win to mark six straight victories against the Rams. With the win, Hofstra improved to 6-2-1 on the season.
Fordham (5-2-1) held a 13-3 advantage in corners and outshot Hofstra, 14-8, but a solid defensive performance and three second-half saves from senior
Friederike Mehring preserved the Hofstra win.
Junior
Kristin Desmond opened the scoring on the game's first shot, after senior
Jill Mulholland corralled a throw-in and sent a pass to Desmond, who tipped it in. Mulholland and Desmond have now teamed up for the game's first goal in back-to-back games.
Then, on Fordham's sixth corner of the first half, Amanda Miller found the back of the net to equalize, settling the corner and putting it in from close range.
Hofstra put up a pair of quality chances after the Fordham goal, with senior
Emily Agudelo getting a quick strike off in the 18-yard box that skidded just to the left of the post and sophomore
Sabrina Barton blasting a shot off the crossbar in the 36th minute.
Mulholland then capitalized on the pressure in the 39th minute, making a move around a defender and sending an impressive curling strike into the top corner from about 20 yards out. Mulholland is now eighth on the program all-time chart with 63 points and tied for eighth with 24 career goals.
Entering in the second half, Mehring was tested right away, making a big stop on a point-blank shot before punching away the resulting corner kick less than 10 minutes into the frame. She made another key play just moments later, smothering a shot right on the goal line to preserve the Pride lead.
Hofstra opens Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Drexel before travelling to Delaware for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
