WTEN: Hofstra Opens Season With 5-0 Win At Wagner

Staten Island, NY - Hofstra won all four completed singles matches and took the doubles point with three wins in a season-opening 5-0 win at Wagner Saturday afternoon. Hofstra improved to 1-0 on the season while handing the Seahawks (1-1) with their first loss of the season.

Carmen Pestano and Jasmine King got the ball rolling with a 6-1 win over Avika Sagwal and Vedika Anand at first doubles. Sarah Herndon and Michal Kaplan, who teamed together successfully last season, continued their fine play with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 flight over Samantha Hodges and Madison Pautsch. That win clinched the doubles point, but Giulia Leone and Disha Yellayi completed the sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Brenda Cumpa and Rina Baynes.

Pestano put Hofstra up, 2-0, with a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Baynes. Herndon extended the lead at the third flight with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Anand. Kaplan would clinch the match win at second singles as she defeated Hodges 6-3, 6-2. King, a freshman, won her Pride debut with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Sagwal at first singles. With the outcome decided and a second match looming, the fifth and sixth singles matches were not completed.

Hofstra will be off from competition for almost two weeks, returning to the court for the Hofstra Invitational on September 30 and October 1. The tournament will take place at Eisenhower Park.
