Hempstead, N.Y. – Sophomore
Madeline Anderson headed in
Noriana Radwan's corner kick in the 96th minute to give Hofstra women's soccer a 2-1 overtime victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Hofstra remains unbeaten by Fairleigh Dickinson, improving to 5-0-1 in the all-time series.
The game was tied for all but 1:03, as the Pride (5-2-1) broke a scoreless tie in the 78th minute on a goal from junior
Kristin Desmond before the Knights (1-6) once again knotted the score in the 79th to send the game to overtime.
Hofstra dominated possession in the first half, firing 13 shots, including an
Emily Agudelo strike that hit the post early in the frame. Senior
Kerri Baum had a quality chance with about 13 minutes to go in the first, but FDU goalkeeper Amanda Fitzgerald smothered Baum's point-blank shot. Classmate
Jill Mulholland nearly got the Pride on the board just moments later when Fitzgerlad got a fingertip on Mulholland's strike to tip it over the crossbar.
The teams exchanged chances early in the second half, with the Knights hitting the crossbar on a free kick before sophomore
Sabrina Barton's crafty heel flick hit the post at the other end.
Desmond finally broke the scoreless drought, tucking a pass from Mulholland into the lower left corner. Mulholland had taken on a pair of defenders in the box and slid the ball to Desmond as Mulholland was sliding to the turf. The goal was Desmond's third of the season, tied for second on the team, while Mulholland leads the Pride with 15 points.
But, before the momentum could fully shift in the Pride's favor, Connie Lewis capitalized on a Hofstra miscue just over a minute after Desmond's goal to once again bring the score even.
After FDU applied pressure in the late goings of the second half, Hofstra regrouped and regained control in overtime. Anderson nearly headed in the Pride's first corner kick of the extra period before putting away the second on a solid service from Radwan to get Hofstra back in the win column.
Mulholland led the Pride with seven shots, while Desmond and Barton each had four. Barton and freshman
Maya Watkins both earned their first collegiate starts, while freshmen
Brenda Quinn and
Rachel Cardinal made their debuts off the bench.
Redshirt-sophomore
Ashley Wilson and senior Friderike Mehring once again split time in net, with Wilson making two saves to keep everything out in the first half and Mehring stopping three shots in the second.
Hofstra plays its next five games on the road, beginning with its final nonconference game of the season at Fordham at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
