Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Volleyball team finished up play at the Syracuse Tournament with a three-set sweep of Siena after falling in four sets to #17 Penn State earlier in the day.
Hofstra is now 7-3 overall following today's action. Penn State improved to 4-3, while Siena fell to 1-8 with the loss.
Against the Nittany Lions, Hofstra got a balanced attack as sophomore
Nanishka Perez had 13 kills, senior
Veronika Kostova chipped in with 11 and junior
Leticia Valente tallied 10. Perez finished with a double-double as she added 11 digs in the contest.
Hofstra battled in the first two sets against Penn State, falling in a close contest to open the match before knotting the match at one set each with a close victory in the second stanza.
In the Siena match, Kostova posted 11 kills, while sophomore
Luisa Domingues tallied 19 digs to lead the way for the Pride. Hofstra won two relatively close sets to start the contest before hitting .317 in the third set and holding the Saints to a .000 attack percentage in closing the match.
Hofstra held Siena to a .091 hitting percentage in dominating the match in three sets.
The Pride continued to share setting duties with senior
Hannah Klemm tallying 25 against Penn State and 24 versus Siena, while freshman
Luisa Sydlik chipped in with 15 versus Penn State and 19 against Siena.
Hofstra returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Seton Hall at 8 p.m. That match will take place at the David S. Mack Fitness Center.
NOTES
- The second set win by Hofstra vs. #17 Penn State marked the first set win by Hofstra against a ranked team since taking the second set against #17 Michigan State back on September 15, 2000.
- The win over Siena gave Hofstra a 4-0 record in 2016 against teams from New York State. The Pride is now 106-32 (77%) all-time as a NCAA Division I program against schools located in New York State.
- The double-double by Perez against Penn State was her team-leading second of the season.
