Hempstead, N.Y. – Junior
Noriana Radwan netted her second goal of the season in the 73rd minute to help Hofstra improve to 3-1 with a 1-0 win over Columbia on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Radwan had four shots in the first half alone, including a solid strike from long range in the 10th minute that sailed just inches wide of the far post. She led all players with six shots total, finding the back of the net midway through the second half. Senior
Jill Mulholland got the ball just past midfield and slid a pass to Radwan, who was wide open.
Radwan dribbled into open space and sent a high blast from about 25 yards out over the hands of Columbia goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse. With the assist, Mulholland now has at least a point in three of Hofstra's four games this season.
The Pride had a number of other quality chances on net. Senior
Emily Agudelo took a shot early in the second half that Whitehouse bobbled. Junior
Kristin Desmond was there to try to knock it in, but Whitehouse eventually gained control. After Radwan had gotten Hofstra on the board, sophomore
Brianna Doran nearly made it 2-0, heading a shot just high off of a corner kick. The Pride finished the game with a 20-10 advantage in shots including eight shots on frame.
Columbia (1-1) tested the Hofstra backline, especially as time wound down. Emma Anderson took three shots in the final three minutes of play as the Lions pressed to find the equalizer. But the Pride defense once again wouldn't break, marking the team's third shutout in the first four games of the season. Redshirt-sophomore
Ashley Wilson and senior
Friederike Mehring combined for the clean sheet, with Mehring making four saves in the second half.
The victory was Hofstra's fourth straight over Columbia and seventh in the all-time series.
After two games at home, the Pride hits the road next weekend, heading to the Army West Point Invitational to take on DePaul on Friday and UNC Greensboro on Sunday.
