WSOC: Hofstra Falls To No. 2 Penn State

University Park, Pa. – In the second game of the Penn State Invitational, Hofstra scored first, but fell to the second-ranked Nittany Lions, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.

For the second time in as many games, Hofstra (1-1-0) got on the board in the opening moments of the game. Junior Noriana Radwan bent a corner kick on net in the eighth minute, and it bobbled around inside the box and into the net to give Hofstra an early 1-0 lead.

Penn State (1-0-1) generated an opportunity in the 16th minute, getting off a point blank shot from just inside the 18-yard box, but Pride goalkeeper sophomore Ashley Wilson made a diving save. The Nittany Lions then knotted the score at one in the 24th minute, with Charlotte Williams tucking away a rebound from Elizabeth Ball's strike.

In the 39th minute, Hofstra was issued a red card, and the resulting free kick allowed Williams to put away her second goal of the day to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead heading into halftime. Salina Williford then made it 3-1 in the 84th minute.

Wilson made four saves in the first half, while senior Friederike Mehring added three in the second half.

Hofstra hosts Boston University at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Pride's home opener.
