SB: Hofstra Drops Doubleheader To Charleston

Hempstead, NY – Sydney Shipley took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of game two and finished with a three-hitter as College of Charleston posted a 4-2 victory and completed a doubleheader sweep of the Pride Saturday at Bill Edward Stadium. The Cougars won game one, 4-3.

Charleston improved to 30-21 overall with the win and 8-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the wins. Hofstra dropped to 24-20, 8-8 in the CAA with the pair of losses.

The Cougars scored a run in the third on an RBI double from Kelly Sinclair and then tacked on two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Madison Brown and Taylor DuPree. Charleston scored a fourth run on a solo home run from Jordin Jones in the seventh.

Shipley kept Hofstra hitless until senior Caryn Bailey's fifth-inning double broke up the no-hitter. She allowed two singles in the seventh when the Pride broke the shutout. Sophomore Brielle Pietrafesa singled and went to second on a walk to classmate Nikki Michalowski. A single by freshman Madison Ambush loaded the bases. Sophomore Megan Patierno then hit into a fielder's choice that drove in Pietrafesa and a second run scored on a throwing error.

Shipley improved to 10-9 with the win, allowing the three hits and two runs. Freshman Madison Grimm (6-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings.

In the first game, Ambush had two hits and two RBI and senior Chloe Fitzgerald added two hits but the Cougars rallied from a 3-1 deficit with a three-run sixth inning to post a 4-3 victory.

Hofstra jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Ambush's fourth homer of the season. Charleston tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on a single up the middle by Brown that scored Carly Hansis, who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Pride regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame when Michalowski was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved another base on an illegal pitch and then scored on a passed ball. Hofstra boosted the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on a RBI single to left by Ambush that plated junior Lacey Clark, who doubled to left.

But Charleston had some good luck in the sixth after one out. Pride junior Jessica Peslak allowed a single to Hansis and then walked Kashmir Huckaby and Brown to load the bases ending Peslak's day. Freshman Courtney Scarpato was greeted with a RBI single by Dupree, scoring Hansis. Sinclair then reached on a run-scoring error that plated Huckaby. Sara Garcia then scored Brown with a run-scoring ground out for a 4-3 Cougars lead.

The Pride opened the seventh with a single by Pietrafesa. But Charleston starter Samantha Martin got the next three Hofstra batters to post her 14th win of the season against nine losses. Peslak took the loss for the Pride and is now 17-9 this season.

Hofstra and Charleston conclude the series Sunday at Noon. The game marks the final home game in the careers of four Hofstra seniors – Bailey, Fitzgerald, Kim Smith and Alyssa Cuzzola. The four will be honored in a pregame ceremony at 11:45.
