SB: Hofstra Drops A Twinbill To JMU To End Season

Harrisonburg, VA - The Hofstra Softball team ended their 2016 season by dropping a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader to the eight-ranked Dukes of James Madison, 4-0 and 7-1 at Veterans Memorial Park Saturday afternoon.

Hofstra ends its season with a 24-22 overall mark and an 8-10 slate in conference play. James Madison, the CAA regular season champions, improves to 43-4 overall and 18-1 in league play.

While Hofstra came into the weekend with the top hitting team in the CAA, the Dukes of JMU had the top pitching staff in the conference and pitching ruled on Saturday. In the first game, JMU senior Jailyn Ford struck out nine Pride batters and held Hofstra to just a second inning single by sophomore Brittany Allocca as Ford won her 15th game in 17 decisions and posted the Dukes' 19th shutout of the year with the 4-0 decision.

JMU scored three times in the bottom of the first on a two-out-two-run double by junior Taylor Newton that scored senior Erica Field, who singled to open the frame and Ford, who walked. Newton was 2-for-3 in the contest with the two RBI and one run scored. Sophomore Jessica Mrozek then singled, driving home Newton for a 3-0 lead. The Dukes added their final run in the fifth inning on a Hofstra error that scored Morgan Tolle, who opened the inning with a single to leftfield.

Hofstra junior Jessica Peslak went five innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs but walked six Dukes as her record slipped to 17-10 on the year.

In the second game, it was the Pride who took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Freshman Madison Ambush smacked her fourth home run of the season, to left-center field, for the early advantage.

But the Dukes touched Hofstra starting freshman pitcher Madison Grimm, who held JMU hitless in the first three innings, for seven runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to blow the game open. It started with a four-run fourth, with sophomore pitcher Megan Good opening with a single and later having pinch-runner freshman Jenny  Behan score on a Hofstra infield error. After loading the bases, junior Nikki Prince singled, scoring Ford, who walked. Then senior Hannah Hayes smacked a two-run double to right centerfield that scored Moran, who walked and Taylor Moore, who pinch-ran for Mrozek, who reached on an error.

JMU added two more runs in the fifth on back-to-back solo homers by Ford and Newton for a 6-1 lead. The Dukes closed out the scoring in the sixth on a run-scoring walk by Good that plated Hayes, who singled earlier in the frame. Hayes was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for JMU while Hofstra sophomore first baseman Nikki Michalowski was 2-for-3 for the Pride.

Good went the distance, scattering six hits and striking out two to post her 28th win against just two losses. After a great start, Grimm allowed seven runs with six earned and six hits and walked seven to fall to 6-8 on the season.
