SB: Michalowski and Peslak Lead Hofstra To A Series Sweep Over Drexel

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore Nikki Michalowski drove in three runs and junior Jessica Peslak allowed scattered four hits and allowed two runs in five innings of work as the Hofstra Pride completed their Colonial Athletic Association sweep of the Drexel Dragons with a 9-2 victory at Bill Edwards Stadium Sunday afternoon.

With their three-game sweep of Drexel, the Pride improved to 24-18 on the season and an 8-6 slate in the CAA. Drexel, which has now dropped three consecutive games, slipped to 17-29 overall and 0-14 in conference play.

Michalowski had a two-run double in the first and a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the sixth. Peslak struck out six and allowed four hits, but just three in the first four innings, to post her 17th win of the year against eight losses. Senior Chloe Fitzgerald was two-for-three at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Brielle Pietrafesa drove in two runs with a double in the fourth inning. Junior Lacey Clark and sophomore Isabel Hansbury each had two hits for the Pride.

Drexel junior Taylor Lee drove in two runs with a first inning, two-run homer to lead the Dragons.

After Drexel took the early 2-0 lead on Lee's homer, the Pride sent 11 players to the plate in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs on six hits and chasing Drexel starter Katie Haley (4-7) after getting just one out in the frame.

Hofstra opened with three straight hits as Fitzgerald doubled and senior Kim Smith drove her home with a single to start it off. After singles by Brittany Allocca and Clark, Michalowski doubled to drive in Smith and Allocca. Hansbury then singled to plate Clark. After a walk and a fielder's choice, Fitzgerald drew a walk that scored Hansbury for a 5-2 lead.

The Pride added three runs on three hits in the third as Fitzgerald singled to drive in Hansbury, who opened the frame with a double and Pietrafesa drove in Bailey, who reached base on a fielder's choice, and Fitzgerald with a single and an 8-0 lead after three innings.

Hofstra added their final run in the sixth on Michalowski's sacrifice fly that scored Allocca, who opened the inning with a walk.

Pride freshman Courtney Scarpato came in relief of Peslak in the sixth and got all six batters out that she faced.

Hofstra returns to action on Saturday, April 30 when the Pride start a three-game CAA set with Charleston with a doubleheader at Bill Edwards Stadium at 2 p.m. The Charleston series finale will be on Sunday, May 1 at noon.
