WTEN: Hofstra Advances To CAA Quarterfinals With Win Over Delaware

Elon, NC - Eighth-seeded Hofstra won all four completed singles matches to defeat Delaware, 4-1, Thirsday morning and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2016 CAA Women's Tennis Championship at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.

The Pride (14-6) will face top-seeded William & Mary at 9 a.m. on Friday, while the Blue Hens' season came to an end with an 8-10 overall record. The win was Hofstra's first at the CAA Championship since 2008 (4-1 vs. Towson). The 14 wins are the most for the Pride since winning 14 matches during the 2007-08 season.

Delaware captured the doubles point to jump out to an early 1-0 advantage. The Blue Hens' No. 2 team of Sara Komer and Sarah Hall topped Michal Kaplan and Sarah Catherine Herndon, 6-3, but Hofstra pulled even when Disha Yellayi and Giulia Leone beat Annie Jaskulski and Arielle Shuren, 6-4, at the third flight. The point was decided at No. 1 as Delaware's Amanda Studnicki and Denny LaMachia edged Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano, 6-4.

The teams had a tightly-contested singles competition that featured three-set matches on five of the six courts. Yellayi was the lone winner in straight sets as she downed Hall, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5. Leone followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 decision over Shuren at No. 6 and Bowen increased Hofstra's lead to 3-1 after getting past Studnicki, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 1. The Pride closed the match out at No. 2 as Kaplan earned a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory over LaMachia.
