SB: Hofstra Splits Home CAA Doubleheader Versus UNCW

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra drilled three home runs to power its way to a 4-3 victory over UNCW in the opener. But the Seahawks scored three first-inning runs and hit two home runs in total for a 5-3 victory over the Pride in the second game as the teams split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday at Bill Edwards Stadium.

Senior third baseman Kim Smith, junior shortstop Michaela Transue and sophomore first baseman Nikki Michalowski all went deep in the opener and junior pitcher Jessica Peslak allowed just two runs in six innings for the victory. Hofstra fell to 16-14 overall with the loss in the second game and dropped to 2-3 in CAA play. UNCW moved to 21-14 and 1-4 in conference play.

Hofstra took a first-inning lead on Transue's RBI ground out against UNCW starter Peyton Jordan (11-4). UNCW responded on Ashley Best's RBI double in the second. Michalowski smashed her career-high sixth home run, going to the opposite way to right-center for a one-out homer in the bottom of the inning.

Transue then drove in her second run of the game when she pulled her sixth home run down the left field line in the third. Smith hit Hofstra's third solo home run in the fifth off reliever Sarah Davis, which put the Pride ahead, 4-2.

That insurance run was crucial as UNCW scored once in the seventh and put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. Freshman Courtney Scarpato stranded runners on second and third by getting Erin Brown to ground out to register her fifth save.

Peslak improved to 11-6 by striking out three and holding UNCW to four hits. She threw 115 pitches.

UNCW raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning of the second game. Merritt Wilkinson hit a two-run home run off Hofstra freshman starter Madison Grimm and Nella Chamblee's RBI single plated Rachel Willis.
Best hit a two-run home run in the third to extend UNCW's lead to 5-0 in support of starter Haley Lenderman, who threw the first four scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen.

The Seahawks went to reliever Laurel Koontz, sparking a Hofstra rally when junior Lacey Clark hit a leadoff home run to left an Michalowski doubled. That prompted UNCW to go to Jordan, who gave up a single and a sacrifice fly. Jordan escaped further damage in the frame and tossed innings without being charged a run.

Clark scored on a sixth-inning wild pitch to bring Hofstra within 5-3. Lenderman returned to the game to start the seventh. Hofstra put the potential tying runs on base when sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca hit a leadoff single and freshman designated player Madison Ambush worked a two-out walk. Lenderman (4-2) induced a force out at second to end the game and snapped an 18-game losing streak to Hofstra in the all-time series.

Grimm logged a complete game in allowing five hits and striking out six. The right-hander threw 116 pitches in falling to 4-5.

Hofstra is 34-4 against UNCW overall.

The teams will meet in the finale of the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
