WTEN: Hofstra Wins Two Matches On Senior Day

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University Women's Tennis team won a pair of matches Saturday at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center, defeating Saint Francis (PA), 5-2, and St. Francis Brooklyn, 5-0.

The wins improved Hofstra's record to 13-6. Saint Francis (PA) fell to 6-14 with the loss, while St. Francis Brooklyn fell to 0-12.

Against the Red Flash of Saint Francis (PA), Hofstra won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano bested Rafaela Panizza and Brittany Plaszewski, 6-1, at first doubles. The Red Flash evened things up with a second doubles win by Raksha Bode and Dani Gryckiewicz over Sarah Catherine Herndon and Michal Kaplan by a score of 6-1. But the Pride prevailed as Disha Yellayi and Giulia Leone posted a 6-2 victory at the third flight over Stephanie Miller and Brittini Jentz.

Pestano (4th flight), Herndon (3rd), Yellayi (5th) and Leone (6th) each won singles matches with Yellayi's 6-4, 6-0 victory over Miller clinching the match for the Pride.

Hofstra won all four completed singles matches as well as all three doubles matches against the Terriers. Sarah Bowen, who was honored before the match as the Pride celebrated Senior Day, picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles over Vanja Savic. Kaplan posted a second singles win over Dezhane Bennett by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Herndon notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jennifer Gonzalez at the third flight and Salini Jariwala earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Maery Fornolles at sixth singles.

Hofstra returns to action Thursday at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
