SB: Hofstra Splits CAA Doubleheader At Delaware

Newark, Del. – Sophomore Megan Patierno hit a two-run home run and junior Lacey Clark hit a solo home run to power a three-run sixth inning as Hofstra defeated Delaware, 6-5, in the second game following a 4-2 win by the Blue Hens in the opener as the teams split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at UD Softball Stadium.

Hofstra moved back to .500 in league play by hitting three home runs in the second game to move to 5-5 against the CAA and 21-16 overall. Delaware moved to 25-14 and 7-4 in the CAA.

Delaware's Leanna Gearhart scored twice in the opener, including the Blue Hens' second run in the second to take a 3-1 lead.

Gabby Klecko's first-inning RBI single off Hofstra junior starter Jessica Peslak (15-7) opened the scoring and plated Gearhart for her first run after the leadoff started the game by working a five-pitch walk and stealing second.

Hofstra sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa hit her seventh home run in the top of the second to tie the score. The rightfielder set a career-high in home runs and became the fourth Hofstra player to reach seven long balls this season when she took Carolyn Szymanski's full-count offering deep to left to tie the score.

Szymanski allowed just one more run after that in her six innings of work to improve to 10-7. She struck out four and worked around six walks in throwing 114 pitches. Delaware staked her to another lead in the bottom of the second when Gearhart's single-up-the-middle drove in Mattie Nuccio. Gearhart then scored her second of the game on a throwing error.

Hofstra moved within a single run in the third when senior third baseman Kim Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home fellow senior Caryn Bailey.  Szymanski forced a pop out to keep Delaware ahead, 3-2, and strand three runners.

Delaware scored an insurance run when Alyshia Dellatore doubled to left-center and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. Peslak was relieved with two outs in the inning as freshman Courtney Scarpato recorded the last out and left one runner on base.

Freshman Madison Ambush posted a seventh-inning leadoff walk and prompted Delaware to bring in reliever Kiersten Coffman, who entered by facing the potential tying run at the plate and retired all three batters faced for her third save. The loss snapped Hofstra's 27-game winning streak in the series and was Delaware's first win against the Pride since 2006. Hofstra shutout Delaware in all three meetings at home in 2015.

Smith lined a RBI single in the first inning to give Hofstra early momentum in the second game. But Delaware struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning off freshman starter Madison Grimm when Klecko reached on a throwing error that allowed the first run to score. Mariah Kondravy's RBI double drove in an unearned run and a second unearned run on Lisa Stacevicz's ground out for a 3-1 Delaware lead.

Nuccio scored in the second to put Delaware ahead, 4-1, before Hofstra moved within a run on sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca's two-run home to left. Allocca hit her seventh of the season to become the fifth Hofstra player to reach that mark this season.

Patierno homered to left-center in the sixth following Allocca's leadoff double to right-center and Clark followed a solo shot to left for back-to-back home runs off Coffman ( 15-6), who went  six innings in the loss.

Grimm logged five innings and allowed just two earned runs to improve to 5-5. The right-hander struck out one and limited Delaware to just five hits. Scarpato then extended her league-leading save total to seven by throwing the last two innings and striking out one.

Delaware scored once against Scarpato in the seventh to bring the Blue Hens within 6-5 of Hofstra. But Scarpato stranded two runners, forcing a fielder's choice with the potential tying and winning runs on base to close out the victory.

Hofstra will face Delaware in the third and final game of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
