SB: Hofstra Drops CAA Series With Loss At Delaware

Newark, Del. – Delaware scored four runs in the fifth inning and rallied for six runs in the sixth as the Pride fell to the Blue Hens, 10-6, in the Colonial Athletic Association series finale on Sunday afternoon from UD Softball Stadium.

Hofstra lost two-of-three in the series to fall to 21-17 overall and 5-6 in CAA play. Delaware improved to 26-14 and 8-4.

Anna Steinmetz hit a three-run home to left-center in the fifth and Lisa Stacevicz hit a two-run double in the sixth to cap the rally.

Senior third baseman Kim Smith drove in three runs and senior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. But Delaware's Kiersten Coffman threw two innings of scoreless relief to give Delaware a chance to come back. Coffman struck out one and did not walk a batter to improve to 16-6.

Hofstra jumped on Delaware starter Carolyn Szymanski for three runs in the first in taking advantage of two Blue Hens' errors. Fitzgerald reached on a fielding error to start the game. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Smith hit a one-out double to left to plate Fitzgerald and junior shortstop Michaela Transue. Sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca scored from first on a throwing error on the relay fro the outfield and Smith advanced to third after being credited with two RBIs. Smith's double was Hofstra's lone hit of the inning.

The Pride extended the lead to 5-0 in the second in painful fashion. Transue and Allocca each were hit by pitches to force in a run. The Pride chased Szymanski from the game without recoding a hit in the second. A hit batter, a Fitzgerald single and a walk loaded the bases and Transue was plunked by an 0-1 pitch to force in a run. Delaware brought in reliever Jordan Cargile to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

Cargile faced Allocca and went ahead, 0-2, before her offering got away from her and hit Allocca to force in the second run. Cargile then got the next two batters out to stand three runners.

Delaware cut Hofstra's lead to 5-4 in the fifth when Mariah Kondravy's RBI single to short brought in Leanna Gearhart. Steinmetz hit a three-run shot to left-center to make it a one-run game.

Smith then collected her third RBI of the day to give Hofstra a 6-4 lead  in the sixth when she reached on a bunt single to third that scored Bailey off a squeeze play.

But Delaware swung momentum in the bottom of the inning when the Blue Hens worked consecutive walks against freshman reliever Madison Grimm (5-6). A sacrifice bunt and another walk loaded the bases and brought in fellow freshman Courtney Scarpato to enter and attempt to register a five-out save.

Delaware prevented Scarpato from registering her eighth save when the right-hander was called for an illegal pitch to allow an inherited runner to score. A fielding error brought in tying and go-ahead runs to put Delaware ahead for good. Kondravy added an insurance run by hitting a RBI single up the middle and Stacevicz's double down the leftfield line drove in two.

Hofstra will resume non-conference play Tuesday with a road game at Stony Brook. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
