WTEN: Hofstra Drops 5-2 Decision To Fordham

Hempstead, NY - Freshman Disha Yellayi and junior Giulia Leone accounted for Hofstra's only two points with victories at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, as the Pride fell to Fordham, 5-2, Thursday evening at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center.

Hofstra saw its two-match win streak halted and fell to 10-6 on the season. Fordham improved to 10-5 with the win.

The teams split the first two doubles matches with the Rams No. 1 duo of Mayu Sato and Estelle Wong posting a 6-1 win over senior Sarah Bowen and junior Carmen Pestano. But the Hofstra freshman tandem of Sarah Catherine Herndon and Michal Kaplan won at the second flight, 6-1, over Gianna Insogna and Whitney Weisberg to even things up. However, Fordham's Alexis Zobeideh and Destiny Grunin edged out Yellayi and Leone, 6-4, at the third flight to win the point.

Hofstra came out strong in singles as Yellayi won at the fifth flight over Insogna, 6-4, 6-0, to tie the score at one. Leone then picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Weisberg to give Hofstra a 2-1 lead in the match. But it was all Fordham the rest of the way as the Rams won four straight matches to earn the win. Sato defeated Bowen at No 1., 6-3, 6-4. Grunin posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pestano at the fourth flight. Wong clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kaplan at the No. 2 flight. Zobeideh closed out the contest with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Herndon at the third flight.

Hofstra won't have time to dwell on the loss as the Pride is back in action tomorrow afternoon at Monmouth with a 3 p.m. match time. The Pride return home Saturday for a pair of matches against Saint Francis (PA) and Saint Francis (PA). Match times are 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
