SB: Hofstra Explodes for 13 Runs In Win Over Iona

New Rochelle, N.Y. – Junior shortstop Michaela Transue went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and keyed an eight-run third inning as Hofstra powered its way to a 13-5 victory over Iona in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon at Donald Walsh Field.

Sophomores Nikki Michalowski and Brielle Pietrafesa each hit two-run home runs for the Pride in the five-inning victory. Five Hofstra players recorded multiple hits as the squad won for the fourth time in the last five games to improve to 20-15. Junior pitcher Jessica Peslak threw a complete-game in improving to 15-6. The Pride improved to 19-0 in the all-time series while Iona fell to 7-21 this season.

Hofstra scored 10 straight runs at one point and broke the game open in the third. The Pride sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning in recording nine hits off two Iona pitchers in the frame. Transue hit two doubles in the inning and scored twice and sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca hit a RBI double and also singled in the inning.

Senior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald went 3-for-4 with a RBI. She was one of four Hofstra players to score two runs, joining Transue, Michalowski and senior outfielder Caryn Bailey.

Hofstra led, 2-1, entering the third before pulling away. Allocca doubled home Transue with the inning's first run off reliever Jordan Courage to put Hofstra ahead, 3-1. Pietrafesa then hit a two-run shot to right to make it a four-run lead. Junior second baseman Lacey Clark doubled and Michalowski hit a two-out single to extend the inning.

Fitzgerald hit a RBI single to center and Bailey became the seventh Hofstra batter to register a hit in the inning with a RBI single up the middle. Transue followed by lining her second extra-base hit of the inning to bring in two and Pietrafesa's RBI single capped the scoring and marked the third run the rightfielder drove in during the inning to put Hofstra ahead, 10-1.

Iona opened the scoring in the first as the first two batters reached on errors. Katie Newton's went to third when her fly ball was dropped and scored when Ashlyn Morris' grounder was mishandled. Peslak worked around the errors and stranded two by retiring three straight batters to end the frame and keep Iona's lead to 1-0.

Hofstra picked up Peslak in the second when Michalowski hit a two-run shot to left-center off Iona starter Alana Evans. Sophomore Isabel Hansbury worked a two-out walk and Michalowski, the ninth-hitter, smashed her seventh home run of the season to give Hofstra its first lead of the game.

Iona's Kristen Turner hit a third-inning two-run home run and Tori Danner's two-run home run in the fourth accounted for the last of Iona's scoring.

Peslak registered her 10th complete game of the season and prevented Iona from scoring in the fifth to end in the game in a run rule. The right-hander struck out six and walked only one batter. Evans (0-2) took the loss for Iona.

Hofstra will resume Colonial Athletic Association play with a three-game weekend set at Delaware. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 12 p.m. as the Pride looks to improve a 4-4 league record.
