WTEN: Hofstra Falls To Charleston In CAA Opener

Oceanside, NY – Michal Kaplan and Carmen Pestano had singles victories while Disha Yellayi and Giulia Leone won at doubles, but it was not enough as College of Charleston posted a 5-2 win over the Pride Friday night at Point Set Indoor.

The loss was Hofstra's first of the season as the Pride fell to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Cougars improved to 6-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play.

The Cougars won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Yellayi and Leone won by a 6-1 score over Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke at third doubles to open the match, but Liza Fieldsend and Brooke McAmis defeated Kaplan and Sarah Catherine Herndon, 6-2, at second doubles. Charleston clinched the point with a win from Katherine Schofield and Mara Argyriou at first doubles over Sarah Bowen and Pestano by a score of 6-4.

Kaplan evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Schofield at the second singles flight. McAmis defeated Herndon, 6-3, 6-1, at third singles to put Charleston back up, 2-1. Helena Nyikos extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Yellayi at fifth singles and Fieldsend clinched the match with a win over Bowen at the first flight, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.

Pestano rallied from a set down to post a 2-6, 7-5, 10-7, win over Argyriou at the fourth flight to give the Pride their second point. Jones closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, win over Leone at sixth singles.

Hofstra will be back in action Saturday afternoon at Hartford.
