MBB: Hofstra Moves On To CAA Semifinals With Convincing Win Over Drexel

Baltimore – Senior guard Juan'ya Green had  22 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to an 80-67 victory over Drexel on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at Royal Farms Arena.

Top-seeded Hofstra improved to 23-8 and advanced to the semifinals, where the Pride will take on the winner of the James Madison-William & Mary matchup on Sunday at 1 p.m.  Drexel, the ninth seed, ended the season 6-25.

Sophomore center Rokas Gustys posted his 20th double-double of the season by posting 16 points and 11 rebounds.  The All-CAA first-team selection shot 6-of-7 from the field and now has double-doubles in 16 of the last 17 games.

Four Hofstra players finished in double figures, including Green, Gustys, junior guard Brian Bernardi (14 points) and senior forward Ameen Tanksley (13 points). The Pride knocked down nine three-pointers to help Hofstra win its seventh straight game. The program is on its longest winning streak since the 2009-10 squad also won seven in a row.

Hofstra's victory total of 23 is the most since the 2005-06 campaign in which the Pride finished 26-7. The Pride advance to the semifinals of the CAA Championship for the second consecutive season.

Hofstra took a 13-point lead into the break as Green led the way with 13 points in the opening 20 minutes and Gustys added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Pride would never trail in the opening stanza, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead following Tanksley's old-fashioned three-point play. A 9-2 run later in the half would make it a nine-point advantage as freshman guard Justin Wright-Foreman hit a pair of free throws with10:02 left before intermission.

Gustys' layup with eight minutes to left would give Hofstra its first double-figure lead at 26-16 and the lead would grow to as much as 15 in the first half before the Pride settled for a 13-point advantage heading into the second stanza.

Bernardi would drain a three-pointer to finish off a 7-0 run to open the second half as Hofstra pushed the lead to 20, 49-29, less than two minutes into the half.

Drexel answered with a 7-0 run of its own and would cut the deficit to 49-36 heading into the under-16 media timeout.

The Dragons would use a 7-1 run later in the second half to get the Hofstra lead back under double figures as they turned a 58-43 deficit into just a nine-point Pride lead, 59-50, following Tavon Allen's three-pointer.

Green and Bernardi would then step up for Hofstra as the CAA Player of the Year hit a pair of free throws and Bernardi hit his fourth three-pointer of the game to push the advantage back to 15.

Hofstra was never seriously challenged the rest of the way as they would pull away for the 13-point victory.

Tomorrow's semifinal contest will air nationally on the NBC Sports Network and is also available on WRHU (88.7 FM). The online video broadcast can be accessed on the NBC Sports website/app and the audio only broadcast is available at GoHofstra.com/PrideProductions.
