SB: Hofstra Posts Come-From-Behind Win At LIU Brooklyn

New York – Sophomore first baseman Nikki Michalowski hit a bases-clearing triple and fellow sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa drove in two to help Hofstra post a come-from-behind 9-4 victory over LIU Brooklyn in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon from LIU Field.

LIU Brooklyn's Ariana Lopez hit a third-inning grand slam but Hofstra erased a four-run deficit by scoring nine unanswered runs to snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 15-13. The Pride split the season series against the Blackbirds. LIU Brooklyn won the first meeting between the schools in the FGCU Invitational on Feb. 21 but fell to 11-21 with the loss.

Senior third baseman Kim Smith scored two runs and junior pitcher Jessica Peslak reached double digits in victories by holding the Blackbirds to six hits in a complete-game effort. Peslak struck out one and walked just two to improve to 10-6.

Pietrafesa went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Madison Ambush hit a two-run home run in the seventh to cap her first collegiate start. Her first career home run went for a grand slam in the team's previous game at Towson and she went deep for a second consecutive contest to provide a pair of insurance runs.

Senior outfielder Caryn Bailey went 2-for-4 to extend her on-base streak to 19 games. Michalowski added to her team-leading multi-RBI total by driving in at least two runs for a ninth game.

The Blackbirds broke through in the third when Kayla Gloady and Karlie Brady recorded back-to-back one-out singles and Whitney West walked to load the bases. Lopez pulled a 2-1 pitch deep to left for the grand slam and her season's third home run.

Hofstra answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth against starter Erynn Sobieski. Pietrafesa's RBI single started the rally and Michalowski's triple knotted the score. Smith hit a leadoff single and eventually scored on Pietrafesa's single up the middle. Ambush fell behind in the count with two on and two outs before a fastball hit her in the helmet to load the bases.

Michalowski capitalized by driving a long fly ball to right-center that West tried to chase down at the wall. West couldn't get to the ball in time and crashed into the white portable fence, falling on top of it as the ball rolled to center. Michalowski cruised into third after clearing the bases to tie the score at four.

Hofstra took the lead for good in the fifth. Bailey and Smith hit consecutive singles to start the inning. Sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca tried to sacrifice the runners into scoring position with a well place bunt back to the pitcher. Sobieski hurried her throw to first and the ball skipped into the railings in foul territory, allowing Bailey to score on the error.

Pietrafesa hit her second RBI single in as many innings to score Smith, who totaled two runs in the contest, to end Sobieski's outing. The right-hander fell to 6-14 after allowing six runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings.

Hofstra will resume Colonial Athletic Association play with a Saturday doubleheader against UNCW at 2 p.m.
