SB: Hofstra Drops CAA Opening Series At Towson

Towson, Md. –  Hofstra freshman Madison Ambush hit her first career home run with a seventh-inning grand slam, but Towson's Shelby Stracher and Holiday Cahill each hit three-run home runs to lift the Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Pride in the finale of the three-game Colonial Athletic Association-opening series on Sunday afternoon at TU Softball Complex.

Sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa hit her fifth home run for Hofstra and Ambush recorded her first four career RBIs with one swing to make it a one-run game in the seventh. Hofstra still lost two-of-three in the series to fall to 14-13 overall and 1-2 in CAA play. Towson improved to 21-6 and 2-1.

Stracher staked Towson to a 3-0 lead in the first. Towson worked back-to-back walks against junior Jessica Peslak (9-6) and Cahill it a home run to left off a 1-2 pitch as one of two hits in the inning.

Pietrafesa brought Hofstra within 3-1 in the top of the second when she led off the second by taking Blakely Thrower deep to center off a full-count offering.

Towson responded by taking a 6-1 edge when Stracher ignited a two-out rally. Following a one-out double, Peslak induced a ground out before putting a second runner on a hit-by-pitch. Stracher then took a 2-0 pitch to left for Towson's second three-run home run of the afternoon.

Thrower (6-1) kept Hofstra at bay before the Pride broke through with a multi-rally seventh-inning rally for the second straight game. Thrower allowed eight hits in six innings but allowed just the one run while striking out two. Hofstra left 12 runners on base in total.

Megan Dejter entered in relief to start the seventh and Hofstra worked back-to-back walks. A fly out preceded a third walk to load the bases and Ambush hit a home run down the leftfield line for her first career long ball and RBIs to make it a one-run game. Ambar Hickman entered in relief and hit sophomore Nikki Michalowski to put the potential tying run on base. Hickman forced a ground out and a fly out to secure her season's second save.

Hofstra will be back in action on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Syracuse.
