WTEN: Towson Gets Past Hofstra In CAA Matchup

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra was swept in a Colonial Athletic Association match against Towson Saturday afternoon at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center. Hofstra saw its three-match win streak snapped and fell to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in CAA play.

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the match after winning two of the three doubles matches. Hofstra's Disha Yellayi and Giulia Leone picked up the Pride's lone win on the day, a 7-6 (5) win over the duo of Renate van Oorschodt and A.J. Gomer. Towson's Lucy Williams and Lucy Gloninger posted a 6-3 win over Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano at first doubles, while Nicole Shakhnazarova and Barbora Vasilkova posted a 6-1 victory at the second flight over Michal Kaplan and Sarah Catherine Herndon.

Towson swept singles play, though four flights went to third-set tiebreakers.

Shakhanzarova (7-6 (4)) and Bowen (6-2) alternated set wins at the number one flight before the Tigers No. 1 responded with a 6-4 win in the third set to secure the victory. Kaplan took the first set from Williams at the second flight, 6-4, before falling in the final two sets, 6-4 and 7-6 (8).

Vasilkova (6-3) and Herndon (6-4) split the first two sets at No. 3 singles before the Towson player came out on top with a 6-4 win in the final set. van Oorschodt and Leone also battled in a three-set match at the sixth flight. Leone won the first set, 7-6 (4), but lost the final two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.

Gomer defeated Pestano 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth flight while Gloninger posted a 6-2, 6-1 win against Yellayi at fifth singles.

Hofstra is back in action Wednesday at Stony Brook. Match time is 2 p.m.
