SB: Hofstra Splits CAA Opening Day At Towson

Towson, Md. – Sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca drove in four runs to lift Hofstra to an 8-2 win in the opener before Towson posted a 6-5 victory in eight innings in the second game as the Pride split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at TU Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Allocca hit a RBI single to right and smashed a three-run home run in the fifth for the victory in the CAA opener. Senior Kim Smith's three-run double in the seventh of the second game ignited a four-run rally to send the game into extra innings before Towson won in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch. Hofstra moved to 14-12 overall and 1-1 in league play while Towson went to 20-6 and 1-1.

Hofstra struck for three runs in the top of the third off Towson starter Megan Dejter (8-4). Sophomore Megan Patierno pulled a leadoff home run to left center off Djeter's second pitch. Smith, who totaled four RBIs on the day, singled home sophomore Brielle Pietrafesa and Allocca lined a RBI single to right for the 3-0 edge.

Shelby Stracher and Holiday Cahill hit back-to-back home runs to start the bottom of the fourth. But that would be the only offense Towson would generate in the opener. Junior pitcher Jessica Peslak threw 4 1/3 innings and did not allow a base hit outside of the two home runs. The right-hander struck out seven against just two walks to improve to 9-5. Freshman Courtney Scarpato threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to help Hofstra secure the victory.

Hofstra added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Allocca took Dejter deep to left for a three-run home run in the sixth off a full-count and senior outfielder Caryn Bailey homered down the right field line off reliever Blakely Thrower for the final margin.

Bailey increased her career home total to 34, which trails Tessa Ziemba (2010-13) by just five for the second-most in team history.

Towson took a 5-1 lead over Hofstra into the seventh of the second game. Ambar Hickman had only allowed one run through the first six innings which came when sophomore Nikki Michalowski's RBI single drove home Pietrafesa.

The Tigers gave Hickman a cushion when Kendyl Scott hit a RBI single off Scarpato, who started the second game. Brook Miko's double and an unearned run in the fourth extended Towson's lead to 3-0.

Michalowski's hit made it a two-run game before Towson struck again in the sixth on Miko's two-run home run to center for a 5-1 lead.

Hofstra was down to its last strike before mounting a four-run rally. Patierno started the out-rally on a single to center and Michalowski and senior Chloe Fitzgerald also singled to load the bases. Hickman induced a pop out to retire the second batter of the inning.

Smith then delivered a clutch hit with a 2-2 shot off the center field wall that just barely missed being a game-tying grand slam. Smith had to settle for a bases-clearing triple that put her in scoring position as the tying run. Allocca then pulled a single to the left side and Smith score the tying run. Another single, from Michaela Transue, put runners on the corners and Thrower came in for Hickman. A ground out sent the game to the bottom of the seventh tied at 5.

Freshman Madison Grimm, who entered with two outs in the sixth and stranded both runners she walked, started the seventh by walking a batter and hitting the second one she faced. Scarpato came back into the game and forced two fly outs. Miko then delivered a single to right and Towson waved home the lead runner Cahill. Pietrafesa's strong throw from right reached Allocca at home in plenty of time to get Cahill before she slide across the plate to send the game into extra innings.

Thrower (5-1) retired the side in order in the eighth. Scott doubled to right-center to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a bunt single. That was key move as Scott scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Scarpato fell to 1-3.

Hofstra and Towson will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
