SB: Hofstra’s Offense Powers Doubleheader Sweep Over Penn State

University Park, Pa. – Junior shortstop Michaela Transue drove in eight total runs as Hofstra powered its way past Penn State with a 15-8 victory in the opener and a 9-6 win in the nightcap, in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Beard Field.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Scarpato picked up the save in the first game and threw six innings in her first career start for her first collegiate victory in the second game. Hofstra improved to 13-9. The Pride has scored 53 combined runs in the past five games. Penn State fell to 9-13.

Transue entered the doubleheader with eight RBIs in 20 games this season. She matched that total in the two-game sequence by going a combined 6-for-6 with three walks, reaching base safely in all nine plate appearances.

Transue went 4-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored in the opener, smashing a three-run home run in the seventh. Hofstra scored its most runs in a game since April 1, 2015 when the Pride put up 16 runs in a win over Iona.

Senior outfielder Caryn Bailey drove in two runs and scored twice in that game as seven Hofstra players scored at least two runs. Sophomore Megan Patierno was one of those seven, who also added two RBIs.

Junior Jessica Peslak (8-4) went four innings to earn the win. Scarpato limited Penn State to just one earned run in her three innings of work to log her team-leading fourth save.
Hofstra scored four runs in the second to erase a 2-0 deficit, twice in the third, once in the fifth and posted a five-run fifth to continue the onslaught.

Three straight base hits off Penn State starter Marlaina Laubach (4-4) loaded the bases before senior Alyssa Cuzzola lofted a sacrifice fly. Patierno then pulled a two-run double down the leftfield line and a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases and ended Laubach's outing after just four outs.

Bailey worked a bases-loaded walk off reliever Madison Seifert for a 4-2-lead. The Nittany Lions scored one in the bottom of the inning to make it a one-run game but would not get closer. Hofstra scored two unearned runs capitalizing on Penn State first baseman's Macy Jones' fielding error.

Transue added a RBI single to center in the fourth to plate Bailey and Hofstra scored five runs in the next inning. Bailey worked another bases-loaded walk off Seifert and senior Kim Smith also walked to force in a run before Christy Von Pusch came in. Sophomore Brittany Allocca greeted her with a RBI ground out and Transue hit a two-run single to the right side to give Hofstra a cushion.

Transue continued her torrid hitting in the second game, contributing to another potent output from the lineup. Down 1-0 in the second, Hofstra got to Jones, who started the nightcap for the Nittany Lions.

Allocca smashed a leadoff home run and Transue singled. A walk and a single loaded the bases and Patierno drew another base-on-balls to score a run. Sophomore first baseman Nikki Michalowski's sacrifice fly capped the three-run rally.

Transue then homered off Jones, pulling a two-run shot to left for a 5-1 Hofstra lead. It was Transue's third home run of the season.

Bailey, who hit a career-high 16 home runs last season, went deep for the first time in 2016 when a fourth-inning solo shot to right-center off reliever Jessica Cummings for a 6-1 Hofstra lead.

Michalowski hit a seventh-inning solo home run for a 9-4 edge. Freshman Madison Grimm came on in relief two batters into the seventh and recorded the final three outs to secure the victory.

Hofstra will conclude the three-game set on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
