SB: Hofstra Drops Series Finale At Penn State

University Park, Pa. – Penn State struck for three first-inning runs and three Nittany Lions recorded multiple RBIs as Hofstra fell, 10-2, in five innings on Sunday afternoon at Beard Field.

Sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca and sophomore first baseman Nikki Michalowski each recorded RBIs for Hofstra. But Penn State registered 11 hits in just four total turns at bat for the run-rule victory. Hofstra still won two-of-three in the series after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader and is 13-10 on the season. Penn State improved to 10-13.

Five Penn State pitchers, each throwing one inning, combined to hold Hofstra to four hits. The Pride got through against starter Marlaina Laubach when senior Caryn Bailey doubled and Allocca singled her home for a 1-0 lead.

But Penn State answered back against junior starter Jessica Peslak (8-5). Toni Polk's two-run single helped the Nittany Lions capitalize on two Hofstra errors for the three-run rally.

Jessica Cummings (1-1) came on in relief in the second with the 3-1 lead. Michalowski doubled home senior Alyssa Cuzzola to bring Hofstra within a run, but Cummings got out of a bases-loaded jam with the Nittany Lions up by a run.

Penn State then scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. Macy Jones followed a leadoff single by hitting a two-run home run and Rebecca Ziegler's RBI single through the right side gave the Nittany Lions breathing room.

Penn State scored three runs on four hits in the fourth and took advantage of two more Hofstra errors to take a 10-2 lead to put the run rule in place. Madison Seifert threw a 1-2-3 fifth to end the contest early.

Hofstra will have a quick turnaround in playing Rutgers in a road non-conference game on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
