SB: Hofstra Falls To Fordham In Final Inning

New York – Senior Kim Smith smashed a pair of three-run home runs and sophomore Nikki Michalowski hit a two-run shot, but Fordham scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh as Hofstra lost a slugfest to Fordham, 12-11, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Bahoshy Field.

Madison Shaw's RBI double with two outs gave Fordham the come-from-behind win in a 2:33 contest. Hofstra fell to 11-9 and Fordham improved to 12-13.

Hofstra registered 16 hits and totaled nine extra-base hits. Junior Michaela Transue finished a home run shy of the cycle and nine different Pride players recorded at least one hit. But Fordham's Jessica Hughes worked a leadoff walk to start the seventh and scored the last of her three runs on Lindsay Mayer's RBI single. Rachel Gillen singled home Amy Van Hoven, who had doubled, to tie the score off freshman Courtney Scarpato.

Shaw, who went 4-for-4 and walked, capped her day by lining a RBI double to left-center that plated pinch-runner Cailin Winokur with the game-winning run. Scarpato (0-1) was charged with the loss. Gillen, who threw 6 1/3 innings in relief, earned the win to move to 8-8.

Hofstra took an 11-9 lead entering the last inning on the strength of the offensive production in a back-and-forth contest featured four lead changes. Michalowski had four RBIs to give her nine in the past three games.

Smith hit her second three-run home run of the game when she pulled Gillen's offering deep to left to turn a 7-5 Fordham lead into a Hofstra advantage in the fourth.

Seniors Chloe Fitzgerald and Caryn Bailey both reached to start the inning and scored for a second time on a Smith long ball. Transue's low liner to right got past a diving Chelsea Skrepenak for a RBI triple and pinch-hitter Lacey Clark beat out a slow chopper to first to plate pinch-runner Madison Ambush for the five-run rally.

Scarpato entered in the sixth after Madison Shaw hit a leadoff double with Hofstra ahead, 10-9. Transue then made a heads-up play in the field on a grounder to short when she turned quickly to get Shaw going to third. After the out on the ensuring rundown, Transue caught a line drive and scooped up a grounder and delivered a strong throw to retire Morgan Figueroa to end the inning.

Fordham then swung the balance of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Hofstra lost for the first time in nine games this season in which the team lead after six innings.

Hofstra scored double-digits in runs for a second straight game and has scored 29 runs in the past three games. Smith has a team-leading six home runs and 20 RBIs.

The first three batters reached for the Pride to start the game, starting with Fitzgerald and Bailey's back-to-back singles. Smith then gave Hofstra the early jolt by taking Fordham starter Lauren Quense deep over the scoreboard in left-centerfield field. Her fifth home run staked Hofstra starting pitcher Jessica Peslak to a 3-0 lead.

Transue doubled and Quense was lifted after recording just two outs. Quense moved to first base and Gillen entered in relief. Gillen stranded the inherited runner to end the first but sophomore second baseman Megan Patierno reached on a leadoff single and Michalowski pulled a home run over the Fordham championship banners in left for a two-run shot and a 5-1 Hofstra lead in the second.

Fordham scored six runs in the bottom of the inning in sending 11 batters to the plate to turn a four-run deficit into a 7-5 lead. Van Hoven ignited a two-out rally by hitting a two-run double to center in capitalizing on a bases-loaded situation. Sydney Canessa hit a two-run home run homer to left-center and Mayer went deep to center for back-to-back home runs to chase Peslak.

Hofstra played its first road game since Feb. 28. The Pride will continue an 11-game road swing with a three-game weekend series at Penn State. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. and Sunday's finale is also set for a 1 p.m. first pitch from Nittany Lion Softball Park and Beard Field.
