WTEN: Hofstra Gets Past Colgate Sunday Night

Oceanside, NY - Michal Kaplan's three-set win over Colgate's Jennifer Ho at the second singles flight clinched the match for the Pride as Hofstra posted a 6-1 win Sunday night at Point Set Indoor.

Hofstra improved to 5-2 with the win, while the Red Raiders dropped to 5-6.

Kaplan posted a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Pride. Hofstra opened the match by winning all three doubles flights to take a 1-0 lead. Sarah Bown and Carmen Pestano defeated Ho and Lauren Hyland, 6-0, at the number one flight. Sarah Catherine Herndon and Kaplan followed with a 6-3 win at the second flight over Cheyenne Brown and Hannah Fleckenstein. Disha Yellayi and Giulia Leone completed the sweep with a 6-4 win over Katie Grant and Kelly Klein at third doubles.

Pestano and Yellayi won their respective singles matches at fourth and fifth singles to open that segment of the match and give Hofstra a 3-0 lead. Pestano defeated Nicole Szczech (6-1, 6-4), while Yellayi had a 6-1, 7-5 win over Klein. Hyland got Colgate on the board with a win over Bowen at first singles. Kaplan then completed her win to clinch the match while Herndon and Leone followed with wins at the third and sixth flight to give the Pride their fifth and sixth points. Herndon had a 6-2, 7-5 win over Grant and Leone defeated Fleckenstein (7-5, 7-6[2])

Hofstra returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Delaware at Point Set Indoor. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
