SB: Pride Sweeps Second Day Of Hofstra Invitational

Hempstead, N.Y. – Junior pitcher Jessica Peslak threw a complete-game three-hit shutout to lift Hofstra to an 8-0 victory over St. John's and the Pride scored four runs in the seventh to give Hofstra a come-from-behind 10-8 win over Connecticut on Sunday afternoon from Bill Edwards Stadium.

The sweep in the finale of the three-team Hofstra Invitational gave the Pride a 3-1 record on the weekend and improved the Pride's overall ledger to 11-8. Connecticut defeated St. John's in the last game of the afternoon to move the Huskies to 7-15. St. John's fell to 8-12.

Sophomore Nikki Michalowski totaled five RBIs on the day and senior Caryn Bailey drove in four. Hofstra scored 18 runs and pounded out 24 hits in the two games combined.
Peslak struck out one and walked just two in six innings against St. John's for her first career complete-game shutout. Hofstra scored six runs in the second off of three home runs to support the right-hander.

Sophomore Brielle Pietrafesa staked Peslak to the early lead when she followed junior Michaela Transue's leadoff walk by hitting a two-run home run off the scoreboard against Red Storm starter Grace Kramer. The shot was the first of three two-run home runs in the inning. Michalowski homered to left-center to chase Kramer and senior Kim Smith hit a two-run shot off reliever Madison Morris to cap the rally.

Sophomore Megan Patierno, who started both games at second, hit a RBI single to score Pietrafesa in the third. The Pride then ended the game with the run rule in the bottom of the sixth when Bailey doubled him fellow senior Chloe Fitzgerald for the 8-0 victory.

Peslak threw 78 pitches and faced 22 batters in improving to 7-4. Kramer took the loss and also was the losing pitcher in the 7-4 defeat to UConn in the finale in which she threw 174 pitches in the complete-game effort. Kramer fell to 4-4.

The Pride won a slugfest in the second game to give the squad a weekend split against the Huskies. Peslak and UConn starter Chelsea Eckert exchanged zeros through the first three innings  before Hofstra, which was serving as the designated road team, scored twice in the top of the fourth when Transue smashed a two-run home run to right-center.

But Connecticut struck for five runs in the bottom of the inning to end Peslak's outing. Alyson Ambler's one-out solo home run down the leftfield line started a stretch of seven consecutive UConn players reaching safely.

An error and a single set up pinch-hitter Heather Fyfe, who hit the first of her two home runs in the game with a three-run shot to left. Taylor Townsend's RBI single off reliever Madison Grimm scored UConn's fifth run of the inning.

Hofstra responded with a four-run fifth led by Bailey's three-run double. The centerfielder is one of five Hofstra players to drive in double-digit runs this season; bringing her season RBI total to 11. Her hit chased Eckert in favor of Kayla Dotty,

Transue's run-scoring single through the left side put Hofstra ahead, 6-5, before UConn's Fyfe hit a two-run home to give the Huskies the lead again in the bottom of the fifth.

UConn added an insurance run in the sixth to put the Huskies ahead, 8-6, entering the seventh. But the Pride chipped away at the deficit against Jill Stockley (3-7). Smith's second home run of the day led off the seventh when she pulled a shot down the line in left to make it an 8-7 game. A walk and a single prompted another Connecticut pitching change. Eckert re-entered and induced a fly out. A single loaded the bases before an infield fly brought Michalowski up with Hofstra down to its last at-bat.

The second-year infielder responded to the pressure by hitting a first-pitch bases-clearing double to left-center. The three-run hit gave Hofstra a 10-8 lead. Freshman Courtney Scarpato closed out seventh for her third save. Grimm earned the victory to improve to 4-4.

Hofstra will next be in action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup at Fordham.
