SB: Hofstra Earns Split In Second Day Of Unconquered Invitational

Tallahassee, Fla. – Hofstra lined three extra-base hits to power its way to a 7-4 victory over Bradley in the first game and lost to UAB, 5-2, in the nightcap to split the second day of the Unconquered Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Florida State's JoAnne Graf Field.

Hofstra is now 7-7 on the season and 1-3 in the tournament. UAB defeated the Pride for a second straight game to improve to 5-10.

Sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa hit a two-run double to center in the sixth to break a tie and propel Hofstra to the victory over Bradley. Seniors Chloe Fitzgerald and Kim Smith each scored two runs in the game to help the Pride complete the comeback versus the Braves (4-9).

Hofstra struck for two first-inning runs off Bradley starter Jaelen Hull. Senior outfielder Caryn Bailey pulled a two-run double down the rightfield line following a leadoff walk and an error for a 2-0 lead just three batters in.

Bradley responded by hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the inning. The Braves started the inning with a single and a hit batter. The third hitter reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases against junior Jessica Peslak. Alyson Clemente's home run cleared the bases.

Peslak avoided further damage and stranded two base runners in the second. That allowed Hofstra to come back in the top of the third when Fitzgerald worked a leadoff walk and Smith's double to left-centerfield scored her from first. Sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca's sacrifice fly following a ground out brought Smith home to tie the score at 4.

Hull and Peslak exchanged zeros from that point until the sixth. Allocca singled and junior Michaela Transue walked to put two runners on. Pietrafesa's two-run extra-base hit off Hull (1-4) broke the deadlock.

Bradley loaded the bases in the sixth but couldn't push across any runs. Peslak retired the leadoff hitter before hitting Caitlyn McCarron. Peslak then struck out the next batter before giving way to freshman Madison Grimm. Bradley greeted the first-year right-hander with a single and walk before Grimm struck out Maria Schroeder to end the threat.

Allocca's RBI single up-the-middle off Hull in the seventh provided an insurance run. Grimm retired all three batters faced in the seventh to secure her first career save. Peslak (4-4) earned the victory in going 5 2/3 innings. She struck out five and threw 111 pitches.

UAB, which won the first meeting against Hofstra on Friday, saw pitcher Cara Goodwin throw a complete game to improve to 3-0. Sophomore Nikki Michalowski's two-run sixth-inning double ended Goodwin's shutout bid. Fitzgerald, Transue, Smith, junior Christie Sinacori and senior Alyssa Cuzzola were the other Hofstra players to notch base hits.

The Blazers scored one run in the second, third and fourth innings to support Goodwin. Analyse Petree's RBI single off Grimm opened the scoring in the second and Kelly Britt's RBI single down the line in left extended the lead to 2-0 in the third. Mary Warren's leadoff home run in the fourth increased the lead to three.

Ashley Johnson's two-run double to left center put the Blazers ahead, 5-0, in the bottom of the fifth. It also helped give Goodwin breathing room. The hurler allowed six hits and struck out one against four walks. Grimm pitched a complete game in striking out one and allowing six hits to fall to 3-3.

Hofstra will conclude the tournament on Sunday versus Bradley at 10 a.m.
