SB: Hofstra Falls Twice In First Day Of Unconquered Invitational

Tallahassee, Fla. – Hofstra lost twice in the opening day of the Unconquered Invitational, falling to UAB, 12-4, in six innings and dropping an 8-0 decision in five innings to No. 13 Florida State at JoAnne Graf Field.

Sophomore catcher Brittany Allocca hit a home run against UAB, though Hofstra still moved back to .500 at 6-6 on the season. Florida State improved to 9-3 and will play Bradley later this evening.

Caitlin Attfield drove in three runs for UAB and Kelly Britt scored three runs. Eight of the nine starters scored at least one run for the Blazers. It was the first all-time meeting between Hofstra and UAB.

UAB posted eight runs – all with two out – in the first to take control early. The Blazers sent 12 batters to the plate and Attfield and JoJo Fallen each drove in two runs in the inning, which saw UAB score seven unearned runs in taking advantage of four walks and an error. The Blazers improved to 4-8.

A hit batter and walk put the first two runners on to start the game. An illegal pitch put the leadoff hitter at third, though Hofstra cut off the potential run on a play at the plate off a grounder to third. Grimm then hit a second batter before posting a strikeout. Lauren Beshel came to the plate with the bases loaded and two out before drawing a walk to bring in the first run. A throwing error at shortstop on the next play brought in two more runs. A walk and a wild pitch made it 4-0.

Another walk re-loaded the bases before Attfield, who was batting for the second time in the inning hit a two-run single to left. Fallen, the team's No. 2 hitter, followed by lining a two-run single to right to stake the Blazers to an 8-0 lead before Hofstra came to bat.

Hofstra chipped into the deficit in the bottom of the inning when Allocca hit a two-run home run off UAB pitcher Madison Hir. Allocca's third home run tied Brielle Pietrafesa for the team lead.

UAB scored another run in the top of the fourth before Hofstra responded for two in the bottom of the inning. Allocca scored off a wild pitch and junior shortstop Michaela Transue's RBI single up the middle pulled Hofstra within 10-4.

Freshman Madison Grimm fell to 3-2 in giving up 10 runs (three earned). The right-hander went five innings and threw 120 pitches. Hir (2-3) pitched four innings and allowed six hits and four runs with two strikeouts against one walk.

Hofstra played a nationally ranked team for the first time this season when the Pride took on a Florida State team ranked 13th in the latest NFCA national poll.

Jessica Burroughs threw a one-hit shutout for the Seminoles in striking out seven without allowing a walk to improve to 6-2. The Seminoles supported Burroughs by scoring once in the first and adding six runs in the fourth.

FSU extended its lead to 7-0 in the fourth by hitting three home runs in the inning. Alex Powers hit a three-run home run, Jessica Warren added a solo shot down the right field line and Ellie Cooper lined a two-run home run to center. Junior pitcher Jessica Peslak (3-4) took the loss for Hofstra. The righty went four innings and struck out two.

Hofstra will continue the tournament on Saturday with a 12 p.m. game versus Bradley. The Pride will then play two more games in the tournament, one Saturday afternoon and one Sunday, with matchups to be determined by previous results.
