SB: Hofstra Falls To LIU Brooklyn To Cap FGCU Invitational

Fort Myers, Fla. – Sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa hit a two-run home run with two outs in the seventh to allow Hofstra to bring the tying run to the plate, but LIU Brooklyn's Erynn Sobieski's complete-game effort allowed the Blackbirds to hold on for a 3-2 win over the Pride in the finale of the Florida Gulf Coast/Four Points Softball Invitational on Saturday at the FGCU Softball Complex.

Pietrafesa accounted for two of Hofstra's five hits while seniors Kim Smith and Caryn Bailey, as well as junior Michaela Transue, accounted for Hofstra's other base hits. The Pride fell to 6-4 and ended the FGCU Invitational with a 3-2 record. LIU Brooklyn improved to 4-6.

Hofstra was originally scheduled to play Southern Illinois. But multiple Southern Illinois players were hospitalized due to illness, forcing the cancelation of the game before LIU Brooklyn agreed to take its place.

Junior Jessica Peslak pitched 5 2/3 innings in taking the loss to fall to 3-3. Sobieski struck out four and did not walk a batter to improve to 2-1.

Peslak pitched out of a bases-loaded, no out-jam to keep the game scoreless in the fourth. A single, hit batter and a walk put three runners on before Peslak forced Angie Vazquez to pop out to short on a full count and Kylie Mulholland to fly out to left on a ball not deep enough to score a run. Ariana Lopez popped up to third as Hofstra stranded three.

LIU Brooklyn broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on a pair of solo home runs. Kayla Gloady's leadoff home run and Victoria Zamora's two-out home run to left staked Sobieski to a two-run lead. Lopez's two-run double to left in the sixth provided an insurance run that proved to be the game-winner.

Pietrafesa hit a home run for a second consecutive game to bring Hofstra within one. Transue's one-out single started a rally, though Sobieski was one out away from a shutout after she got a ground out. But Pietrafesa took a 2-2 pitch deep to left-center. Sobieski settled down and forced sophomore Nikki Michalowski to line out to end the game.

Hofstra will next be in action when the Pride plays the last of three Florida-based tournaments when it goes to Florida State to play five games in the Unconquered Invitational from Feb. 26-28.
