WTEN: Hofstra Downs Saint Peter's In Spring Opener

Jersey City, NJ - Hofstra defeated Saint Peter's, 6-1, Saturday in a non-conference matchup to give Hofstra Director of Tennis Jeffrey Menaker his first coaching victory for the Pride.

The Pride started the match by sweeping the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano downed Lucia Radovic and Malieva Hedberg at first doubles, 6-4. Michelle Kaplan and Sarah Herndon took a 6-1 decision over Elena Melian Puigventos and Claudia Hellman 6-1 at second doubles, and Disha Yellayi and Ria Shah completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory against Stephanie Falcon and Christian Resurreccion.

In singles play, the Pride won the first five matches in straight sets. Bowen defeated Puigventos, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles; Kaplan took a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Radovic at No. 2 singles; Herndon defeated Hedberg, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 singles; Pestano took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hellman at No. 4 singles and Yellayi downed Falcon, 6-1, 6-0, at fifth singles. Aidah Muhammad posted the Peacocks lone win on the afternoon at No. 6 singles with a 7-5, 7-5 win against Salini Jariwala.

Hofstra returns to action Saturday, February 27 when it hosts Lafayette at 7 p.m. at Point Set Indoor in Oceanside, New York.
