SB: Hofstra’s Win Over Saint Louis Leads To Split In FGCU Invitational

Fort Myers, Fla. – Junior second baseman Lacey Clark hit Hofstra's second grand slam in as many days to lift the Pride to a 10-2 victory in five innings over Saint Louis in the second day of the Florida Gulf Coast/Four Points Softball Invitational on Saturday at the FGCU Softball Complex. Hofstra lost the opening game of the day after falling to Marshall, 9-1, in six innings.

Clark's first-inning grand slam against the Billikens and five total RBIs in the game helped Hofstra earn a split on the day and move to 6-3 on the season and 3-1 in the invitational. Freshmen Madison Grimm and Courtney Scarpato combined on a no-hitter, though both of Saint Louis' runs were earned. Grimm walked 11 but stranded nine base runners while striking out two and Scarpato threw two innings of flawless relief as Hofstra posted its first no-hitter of the season.

Junior shortstop Michaela Transue went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored and sophomore Nikki Michalowski added a solo home run to help the Pride defeat Saint Louis (3-5) for the second straight day. Hofstra has won six of the last seven.

Hofstra surged to a 6-0 first-inning lead in the opening inning. The Pride loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk against Saint Louis starter Maddie Baalman (2-3). Transue's bases-loaded walk brought in the first run and Clark followed by pulling a 1-2 pitch to left for a grand slam. Senior Kim Smith hit a grand slam against Saint Louis on Friday. Michalowski then made it back-to-back home runs by powering a solo shot to center.

Grimm pitched around her command issues to improve to 3-1. Saint Louis attempted to make a comeback when the Billikens waited out three walks to load the bases with one out. Another base-on-balls drove in the first run and a sacrifice fly cut Hofstra's lead to 6-2.  Grimm walked her fifth batter of the inning to re-load the bases before inducing a fly out to minimize the damage.

Grimm again walked the bases loaded in the third but again escaped additional trouble by getting a fly out. Hofstra responded in the bottom of the inning by hitting back-to-back home runs for the second time in the game when sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa and Transue each hit solo shots to left to chase Baalman.

Hofstra ended the contest in the fifth when Clark doubled home Transue and senior Alyssa Cuzzola lined a RBI single to center to score Clark and reach the eight-run threshold to complete the game.

Marshall's Briana Daiss hit a home run and drove in five and Jordan Dixon threw a complete-game one-hitter to lead the Thunder Herd to a victory in the opener. Dixson struck out five and walked one to improve to 3-1.

Clark's fifth-inning RBI triple scored Transue to account for Hofstra's only run. Junior pitcher Jessica Peslak fell to 3-2 in the complete-game loss.

Hofstra will conclude the five-game tournament on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. against Southern Illinois.
