MTEN: Hofstra Blanks Saint Peter's In Spring Opener

Leonardo Pires
Jersey City, NJ - Hofstra defeated Saint Peter's, 7-0, in a non-conference men's tennis match on Saturday afternoon. The win was the first in the Hofstra coaching career of Jeffrey Menaker, who became Hofstra's director of tennis in January.

The Pride took two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Niko Vulinovich and Gustav Akesson lost at first doubles to Daniil Ivanov and Gabriel Russotto, 6-2. But Marcus Smith and Yahn Gawrit downed the No. 2 doubles team of Jorge Rodriguez and Jonathan Paredes, 6-1, and the Hofstra pair of Leonardo Pires and Guilherme Freneda defeated Douglas Nover and Cuong Lam at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, to clinch the point.

Smith defeated Ivanov (6-3, 6-2) at No. 1 singles while Akesson and Parades battled at No. 3 singles with the Hofstra freshman prevailing 6-1, 7-6 (3). Gawrit defeated Russotto at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-3). Nover dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Pires at No. 5 singles and Ferneda downed Lam, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. Vulinovich won at second singles over Rodriguez, who was disqualified after losing the first set 6-1 and being down 5-0 in the second set.

Hofstra returns to action on February 27 when it hosts Lafayette at Point Set Indoor at 7 p.m.
