SB: Hofstra Posts First Two Wins Of 2016

Boca Raton, Fla. – A pair of Hofstra pitchers posted their first career victories and sophomore Brittany Allocca registered six RBIs in the opener as Hofstra defeated SIUE, 10-4, and bested Wright State, 3-1, to sweep the second day of the Florida Atlantic University Kick-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon at FAU Softball Stadium.

Freshman Madison Grimm won the opener with a six-inning effort and junior Jessica Peslak also went the distance against Wright State to improve Hofstra's record to 2-2.

Allocca hit two home runs against SIUE, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored to help the Pride erase a 3-0 deficit. Grimm, who was making her second collegiate start, held the Cougars (1-2) to just one earned run and seven hits in seven innings to improve to 1-1.

SIUE loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first on two walks and an error. Grimm then induced a force out at home before Tess Eby's sacrifice fly brought in the first run. Grimm induced a comebacker to the mound to leave the bases loaded and minimized the damage to just one unearned run.

A Rachel Keller RBI single and a run-scoring fielder's choice extended SIUE's lead to 3-0 in the third. Hofstra then responded in the fourth. Senior outfielder Caryn Bailey led off with a double to right off SIUE starter Baylee Douglass and junior second baseman Lacey Clark's single put runners on the corners.

Sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa's RBI infield single plated the first run and Allocca hit a three-run home run to put the Pride ahead, 4-3.

Hofstra added four insurance runs in the sixth, highlighted by Bailey's three-run triple that scored sophomore Nikki Michalowski, junior Christie Sinacori and Allocca. Allocca had reached by lining a RBI single up the middle to score Pietrafesa.

Grimm (1-1) held SIUE to just one more run after the third, which came in the bottom of the sixth when the Cougars scored an unearned run on Keller's RBI single to the left side. Fellow freshman Courtney Scarpato left the bases loaded in the seventh when the right-hander forced pinch-hitter Savannah Fisher to ground out to the circle. Hofstra's win capped the first time the school has played SIUE.

Peslak then followed by holding Wright State to just three hits and one run in seven innings in the second game to even her record to 1-1 and Hofstra's record to .500.

Wright State, the designated road team in the game, jumped to a 1-0 lead when Macey Gunther and Hanna Floyd executed a double steal that allowed Floyd to score and Gunther to take second. Peslak then posted a strike out and induced a ground out and a lineout to junior Michaela Transue at short to strand two.

The score held until the bottom of the fourth when Hofstra capitalized on an error to score two unearned runs off starter Ashley Sharp. Allocca and Transue started the inning with back-to-back singles. Following a fly out, Clark hit a fly ball to right. The play was ruled an error and Transue and Allocca scored to propel Hofstra to its second come-from-behind win of the day.

Pietrafesa hit a solo home run off Sharp (1-1) with one out in the sixth. That insurance run proved key as Wright State (1-2) put the first two runners on the in the seventh on a single and a walk. Peslak forced a pop out and a fielder's choice brought up the potential go-ahead run to the plate with two outs.

Peslak struck out Gunther swinging to stand the potential tying runs on base and register her first career complete game. Hofstra improved to 3-0 all-time against Wright State.

Hofstra will cap the five-game tournament on Sunday with an 11:15 a.m. game against Tulsa. The contest will be a rematch of Friday's season opener, which the Golden Hurricane won.
