SB: Hofstra Caps FAU Kick-Off Classic With Win Over Tulsa

Boca Raton, Fla. – Junior pitcher Jessica Peslak threw six shutout innings and struck out five to lift Hofstra to a 4-2 win over Tulsa in the Florida Atlantic University Kick-Off Classic finale on Sunday afternoon at FAU Softball Stadium.

Peslak, who earned her first career win on Saturday, holding the Golden Hurricane to just four hits to help Hofstra improve its winning streak to three in ending the season-opening tournament 3-2. Peslak improved to 2-1. Freshman Courtney Scarpato earned her first career save by registering all three outs in the seventh. Hofstra also earned a split against Tulsa (3-2) after falling to them on Friday.

Sophomore Brittany Allocca, who drove in six runs on Sunday, added a run-scoring single in the seventh and junior Lacey Clark recorded Hofstra's other RBI.

Hofstra, the designated road team, struck first in scoring an unearned run off Tulsa starter Emily Watson on an unusual play. Junior Michaela Transue worked a two-out walk before Clark struck out swinging. But a passed ball allowed Clark to reach, and throwing error by Tulsa catcher Catherine Horner allowed Transue to score and brought Clark all the way to third.

Peslak escaped trouble in the bottom of the inning, pitching around a leadoff walk and an error to stand two by striking out Kaitlin Allen. The right-hander also stranded two in the sixth by striking out the first and last batter of the inning; fanning Lauren Lomax.

Clark extended Hofstra's lead to 2-0 in the fourth by pulling a two-out RBI single to left to score senior Kim Smith. Hofstra again capitalized on Tulsa's problems behind the plate when the Pride scored a two-out run on a passed ball, allowing senior leadoff hitter Chloe Fitzgerald to race home from third while senior outfielder Caryn Bailey advanced to third for a 3-0 edge.

Allocca's single in the seventh off reliever Ellie Reaves tacked on an insurance run and put Hofstra ahead by four runs.

Freshman Madison Grimm relieved Peslak to start the seventh, though fellow freshman Scarpato entered in a save situation following a walk and a single. A fielding error on the next batter moved Tulsa within 4-1 and left two runners on with none out. A hit batter loaded the bases, though Scarpato induced a fly out to right for a sacrifice fly that put runners on the corners.

The right-hander then faced the potential winning run at the plate and got a strike out before ending the game on a comebacker to the circle. Her effort marked Hofstra's first save of 2016.

Hofstra will next be in action next week in the FGCU Invitational. The Pride is scheduled to play five games in Fort Myers, Florida, from Feb. 19-21, starting with matchups against Saint Louis and FGCU on Friday.
