SB: Hofstra Drops Two Decisions In Season Opener

Boca Raton, Fla. – The Hofstra Softball program opened the new season at the Florida Atlantic University Kick-Off Classic on Friday, falling 6-3 to Tulsa in the first game and losing, 6-1, to the Owls in the opening day of the FAU Kick-Off Classic on Friday at FAU Softball Stadium.

Hofstra (0-2) fell to Tulsa in the first game, marking just the second time in four seasons the Pride did not win on Opening Day. Maddie Withee and Morgan Neal each drove in two runs for the Golden Hurricane.

Tulsa, the designated road team, saw four consecutive batters reach safely for a two-out rally in the third. Hofstra freshman Madison Grimm, who was making her collegiate debut, retired the first two batters before back-to-back walks set up Withee's two-run double to left-center to open the scoring.

Jocelyn Sheffield's solo home run to lead off the fourth extended the Golden Hurricane lead to 3-0. But Hofstra sophomore outfielder Brielle Pietrafesa cut the deficit to one in the bottom of inning with a two-run double off Tulsa's Caitlin Sill. Pietrafesa's extra-base hit brought in two unearned runs with senior outfielder Caryn Bailey and senior third baseman Kim Smith both scoring.

Tulsa tacked on three important insurance runs in the sixth, which proved useful when Bailey lined a RBI double to center in the seventh and the Pride brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. Bailey advanced to third on Smith's two-out single, but Sill forced a ground out to close out the victory to improve to 1-0.

Sill scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort. The right-hander struck out three and walked just one while allowing one earned run. Grimm went five innings and was charged with five runs in falling to 0-1. Fellow freshman Courtney Scarpato also made her NCAA debut and allowed two hits and one run in two innings in relief of Grimm.

The Golden Hurricane used a three-run sixth highlight by Neal's two-run double to right. Catherine Horner's RBI ground out culminated the rally.

Grimm pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in her first collegiate inning, forcing a fly out to right and striking out Julia Hollingsworth to end the threat. Hofstra is now 2-2 all-time against Tulsa.
The Pride opposed host FAU in the nightcap, marking a rematch of last season's NCAA Gainesville Regional in which the Pride bested the Owls in the opener before FAU won a loser's bracket game on the second day to eliminate Hofstra. Eventual national-champion Florida eliminated FAU on the regional's third day.

The schools squared off again on the first day of the new season and FAU starter Kylee Hanson held the Pride to five hits in a complete-game victory. Junior pitcher Jessica Peslak went five innings for Hofstra and gave up six runs (four earned) and struck out one in falling to 0-1.

FAU scored once in the first and again in the third. Carnesha Thompson, who drove in two runs, hit a solo home run to extend the Owls' lead to 3-0 in the fifth.

Smith's RBI double in the sixth scored senior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald to end Hanson's shutout bid. But FAU tacked on three runs in the bottom of the innings to provide the final margin. Melissa Martinez drove in two runs.

Hofstra will continue its five-game slate in the tournament on Saturday with a matchup against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 11:15 a.m. and a game against Wright State scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The Pride will then cap the weekend with a rematch against Tulsa on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
