Hempstead, NY – Freshmen
Jake Kaminsky and
Sage Heller each placed second in their respective weight classes to lead the Hofstra Pride Wrestling team at the Blue and Gold/Journeymen Tussle at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday.
In all, 11 of the 12 Hofstra wrestlers placed in the top five in their weight class. Red-shirt freshman Kaminsky was 2-1 on the day in the 157-pound "B" weight class while true freshman
Sage Heller continued his winning ways with a 3-1 mark in the 174-pound "B" poll. In addition to Kaminsky and Heller, freshman
Vinny Vespa placed third at 133 as did red-shirt sophomore
Bobby Fehr at 165 pounds.
Kaminsky, who evened his season record at 7-7, won his first two matches of the day including a 12-4 major decision over Brown's Willy McDonald in round two before dropping a 15-3 major decision to Campbell's Austin Kraisser in round three.
Heller, who improved to 12-6 this season, opened with a pin of Brown's Galloway Thurston in 3:23 before losing by tech fall to North Carolina State's Nick Reenan in round three. But Heller rebounded for wins in round four and a major decision (11-2) win over Campbell's Alex Herringshaw in round five.
Vespa, who is now 5-6 on the year, dropped his first two matches before pinning Campbell's Paul Ambrose at the 5:33 mark in round three. Fehr, who is now 2-3 on the year, opened his tournament with a 15-2 major decision over Jason Carr from The Citadel before dropping his next two in the 165-pound "B" pool.
Four Hofstra grapplers placed fourth as red-shirt freshman
Connor Burkert (4-7) was 1-2 at 141 pounds, red-shirt sophomore
Connor Muli (3-8) was 0-3 at 149, classmate
Nezar Haddad (4-4) was 1-2 at 197 and sophomore
Omar Haddad (2-7) was 1-2 at 285. Three Pride wrestlers placed fifth as red-shirt sophomore
Michael Oxley (7-8), who was 2-2 at 184, classmate
Ryan Burkert (5-7) was 1-2 at 149 and red-shirt junior
Kyle Krasavage (6-4) was 1-2 at 141. Freshman
Jacob Martin (5-9) finished eighth at 125 pounds.
Hofstra returns to Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) dual match action on Friday, December 9 when the Pride travel to the Bearcats of Binghamton University for a 7 p.m. contest.
