WBB: Hofstra Falls To Hartford In Overtime

Hempstead, NY - Hartford forced overtime with three seconds left in the fourth quarter and took its first lead of the game with 1:12 left in overtime as the Hawks rallied for a 69-67 win over Hofstra Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Ashunae Durant led the Pride with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Sydni Epps posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds (both career-highs). Ana Hernandez Gil had 13 points off the bench for the Pride, while Krystal Luciano notched eight assists. Aleana Leon was also in double-figures for the Pride with 10 points.

Hofstra (7-4) got off to a fast start, scoring the first six points of the game and holding the Hawks scoreless for nearly three minutes. The Pride led, 13-4, before Hartford (9-4) used a 9-0 run to pull even at 13 with 2:07 to go in the opening stanza. Durant stopped the run with basket off an offensive rebound and the teams traded baskets to close the period with the Pride holding a 17-15 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

The Pride scored the first four points of the second quarter to open up a six-point advantage, 21-15, behind baskets from Marianne Kalin and Epps. The Hawks would cut the lead to three on several occasions, including 25-22, before Hernandez Gil's three-pointer put the Pride back up by six at 28-22 with 5:51 on the clock. Sandra Karsten put the Pride up by eight, 30-22, with a layup following a long outlet pass from Olivia Askin with four minutes left in the half. Hartford would score the next basket and then neither team would score for the final 3:37 as the Pride held a 30-24 lead at the half.

Hartford made a push in the opening minutes of the third quarter, using a personal 5-0 run from Lindsey Abed to get within one, 34-33, with 5:56 to play. But the Pride scored four consecutive points to go back up by five with just under five minutes to play in the period. Leading 44-42 with 2:33 to play, the Pride closed out the third period with an 8-0 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Hernandez-Gil to take a 10-point advantage (52-42) into the final quarter.

The 10-point cushion was needed as the Hawks mounted a fourth quarter comeback to force overtime. Hartford used an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to one, 59-58, with 4:38 remaining on a layup from Abed following a Pride turnover. Scoring was at a premium the rest of the way; as the Pride scored the next three points to take a 62-58 lead with 36 seconds to go on a put back from Durant. But Deanna Mayza ended a Hartford scoreless drought of 4:26 with a three-pointer that made it 62-61 with 11 seconds left in the fourth. Hernandez Gil hit one of two free throws to push the lead to two (63-61), but the Hawks would send the game into overtime on a layup from Alyssa Reaves with three seconds on the clock.

The teams would trade three-pointers in overtime before a free throw from Aleana Leon put Hofstra up by one, 67-66, with 1:57 to go. Mayza's two free throws gave Hartford their first lead of the game, 68-67, with 1:12 to play. Hartford forced as shot clock violation on the Pride's next possession but turned the ball over on its trip down the floor to give Hofstra the ball back with 19 seconds remaining. But the Pride could not capitalize on the opportunity as they gave the ball back to the Hawks with 3.3 seconds left. Hartford made one of two free throws to account for the final score.

Mayza led all scorers with 26 points. Sierra DaCosta chipped in with 11 points, while Abed and Reaves had 10 points each.
