Hempstead, N.Y. – In a hard fought battle in cold and rainy conditions, Hofstra Women's Soccer fell to William & Mary, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium after the Tribe converted a corner kick in the 80th minute. The loss drops the Pride to 7-7-1 and 1-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
Sami Grasso, who had a game-high eight shots, scored the game's lone goal, punching in Rachel Moore's corner kick to give William & Mary (8-6-1, 2-3 CAA) the win.
The Pride had a number of quality chances, particularly in the second half. Early in the frame, junior
Kristin Desmond sent a pass up to sophomore
Sabrina Barton on the wing. Barton sent in a solid cross but couldn't find anyone in the box. Desmond followed up just moments later with a blast that Tribe keeper Samantha Johnson had to sprawl out to save.
Junior
Noriana Radwan tested Johnson with about 30 minutes to play, sending in a shot on a free kick from about 25 yards out that Johnson caught.
Then, senior
Jill Mulholland got the ball on the right flank and sent in a quality cross to Desmond, who had an open look on net, but the rain got the best of Desmond's shot.
Just moments before the deciding goal, junior
Katie Gerdes chased down a through ball and got in alone behind the Tribe backline, but Johnson came sliding out to stifle the opportunity.
Redshirt-sophomore
Ashley Wilson made a pair of saves in the first half before senior
Friederike Mehring took over in the second half, making three stops of her own.
Hofstra remains at home next weekend, hosting league-leading Northeastern on Saturday at 7 p.m.
