WSOC: Hofstra Takes Down First-Place Northeastern

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra Women's Soccer earned an important victory Saturday night, taking down league-leading Northeastern, 2-1, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium to keep the Pride's playoff hopes alive.

Senior Jill Mulholland recorded a goal and an assist and junior Noriana Radwan picked up a goal as Hofstra improved to 8-7-1 and 2-4 in Colonial Athletic Association. Goalkeepers Ashley Wilson and Friederike Mehring combined to make eight saves, with Mehring weathering the storm of a pressing Northeastern offense in the second half, making five stops.

The Pride had the game's first chance in just the first minute of play when an early free kick was bobbled by Huskies goalkeeper Nathalie Nidetch. Hofstra continued to press, and Radwan got the Pride on the board in 16th minute, volleying a cross from Mulholland high into the left side of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

Senior Emily Agudelo tallied her first point of the year in the 41st minute, sending a free kick into the box that Mulholland tapped into the empty right side of the net after Nidetch had come off her line to attempt to play it. Mulholland's tally was her CAA-leading 10th of the season, and she is now tied for sixth in program history in career goals (27), sixth in career points (72) and seventh in career assists (18).

Northeastern pulled one back in the 41st minute when Jenny Sinclair played a ball through the Hofstra defense to spring Carly Wilhelm on a breakaway.

The Huskies tested the Hofstra defense in the second half, pushing for the equalizer, putting up 12 shots. But the Pride didn't break, denying Northeastern another goal and holding on for the victory.

Hofstra plays its final weekend of the regular season at home, hosting James Madison on Friday before Towson comes to town on Sunday.
