Hempstead, NY – The Pride honored their 10 graduating seniors in pregame ceremonies but Tribe junior Estelle Hughes scored twice in a five-minute span to break a 2-2 tie and lead William and Mary to a 4-3 victory over Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association regular season finale for both teams at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Hofstra concludes its 2016 season with a 9-10 overall mark including a 1-5 record in the CAA. The Tribe, who advance to the four-team CAA Championship next weekend as the number two seed, improved to 9-9 overall and 5-1 in conference play. William and Mary will face James Madison, the third seed, while top seed Delaware will face fourth seed Drexel in the CAA Championship semifinals next Friday.
Hofstra received goals from seniors
Carissa Witmer, her seventh of the year,
Stella Schoen, her 14
th of the year and
Emily Gallagher, her fifth of the season. Senior goalie
Lauren Saltus recorded seven saves for the Pride. Hofstra outshot the Tribe, 24-15 and took eight penalty corners to William and Mary's three but dropped their sixth consecutive decision.
The Pride opened the scoring at the 14:55 mark when Witmer picked up a rebound and slid it past Tribe goalie Morgan Connor into the right side of the goal. It was Witmer's seventh of the season and 13
th of her career for the backliner.
But the Tribe answered with consecutive goals by junior Cammie Lloyd, the first off a penalty stroke at the 20:26 mark, and the second off a pass from Estelle Hughes at the 28:46 mark. The second goal was Lloyd's 15
th of the season as William and Mary took a 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Hofstra tied the game at 2-2 17:38 into the second half when Schoen scored off a pass from classmate
Claudia Marin Samper, Schoen's goal was the 47
th of her career which ranks seventh on the Hofstra career goals list. It was also her 120
th point of her career which moves her into a fourth-place tie with Jamie Knoblich (120 from 1994-97) for most career points.
Marin Samper extended her school career assists record with the 39
th of her career and the point also extended her career points record which concludes at 151.
But William and Mary broke the tie in the 59
th minute when Hughes picked up a rebound and deposited it behind Saltus. Almost five minutes later, freshman Cassidy Goodwin fed Hughes in the middle of the circle for her seventh goal of the season and a 4-2 lead.
Two Hofstra seniors wrapped up the scoring in the final minute when
Emily Savage sent a pass across the circle to Gallagher on the right side of the goal for her fifth goal of the year. It was also Savage's first career point for the Pride. But it was too little, too late as the Pride season came to a close.
