Hempstead, NY – Freshman
Laura Masciullo continued to cement herself as one of the top players in the Colonial Athletic Association as she had a match and career-high 25 kills, while sophomore
Luisa Domingues had a season-high 11 kills and added her first double-double of the year with 13 digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a come-from-behind five-set win over UNCW on Friday evening at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
Hofstra won by set scores of 18-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20 and 15-12 in winning its second straight five-set match.
For Masciullo it marked the second straight match she has notched a new career-high as she had 23 kills against Northeastern on Wednesday. Domingues adjusted to her new offensive role quite nicely and reached double figures in kills for the first time this season.
The win improved Hofstra's record to 18-7 and 8-4 in league play, while UNCW is now 14-9 and 4-7 in the CAA. UNCW is the defending CAA champion.
UNCW was on fire in the first set, committing no errors on 26 attempts with 11 kills for a .423 attack percentage. The Seahawks would capture a 25-18 score putting the Pride in an early hole. Hofstra recovered in the second stanza, clamping down on defense and holding UNCW to a .077 attack percentage to even the match at one set each.
The same would occur in the third and fourth sets with UNCW once again using a strong offense to take a 2-1 lead in the match as they cruised to a seven-point victory. The Seahawks hit at a .389 clip in the third stanza before the Pride returned the favor in the fourth set and hit .333 to knot the match at two sets each. Masciullo led the way in that set with eight of her match-high kill total.
Hofstra jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the final set before UNCW rallied back and took a 4-3 lead on a Sydney Brock kill. Hofstra would fall behind, 6-4, midway through the set before scoring five straight points to earn a 9-6 advantage following a kill from Masciullo. Both squads would continue to battle through the final points of the fifth set and the stanza was tied at 12 before Domingues put the Pride in front for good with a kill. With the score 14-12 in favor of Hofstra, Masciullo came up huge once again and ended the match with her 25th kill of the contest.
