FH: Marin Samper Breaks Career Points Record But Hofstra Falls At St. Joseph's

Philadelphia, PA – Senior Claudia Marin Samper tallied two goals and one assist to lead Hofstra and break the Pride career points record but the Hawks of Saint Joseph's scored three second half goals to snap a 2-2 halftime deadlock on the way to a 5-3 victory over Hofstra at Ellen Ryan Field Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which dropped its fourth consecutive contest, is now 9-8 on the season while the Hawks of SJU improved to 13-5.

Marin Samper, the forward from Terrassa, Spain, captured her second Hofstra career record with her five points Sunday which give her 150 for her four-year tenure. She broke the record on her second goal of the game early in the second half. She passed Genna Kovar, who accumulated 148 points on a school record 57 goals and 34 assists from 2008-11. Marin Samper, who broke Kovar's career assist record on October 9 at Delaware, now has 56 goals and 38 assists in her career.

In a see-saw contest, the host Hawks opened the scoring 5:16 into the game when Joely Helder deflected a shot by Anna Willocks for her fifth goal of the year, off a penalty corner.

The Pride answered with consecutive goals as Marin Samper scored her 17th of the season off a deflected shot by senior Carissa Witmer at the 12:46 mark to tie the game before Witmer posted her fifth of the season at the 31:02 mark off a penalty corner with Madison Reed and Marin Samper assisting for a 2-1 lead.

But the lead was short-lived as Willocks scored her second of the game and 23rd of the year just 1:48 later to tie the game at halftime at 2-2. The Hawks outshot the Pride, 9-6 in the first 35 minutes with junior Carys Swan making four saves in the Pride goal.

Marin Samper broke the points mark and gave Hofstra a 3-2 lead just 7:39 into the second half off a pass in the circle by sophomore Samantha Schlegel.

The Hawks responded almost immediately-52 seconds later to be exact-with Jackalyn Pauling scoring from Willocks to tie the game at 3-3. Just 31 seconds after that goal, Pepe Serrano notched her third of the year for a 4-3 lead. Serrano would put the final nail in the coffin at the 56:25 mark, beating Hofstra senior goalie Lauren Saltus (1 save), who played the final 23:50, on a penalty stroke.

The Hawks outshot the Pride, 18-16 in the game. Hofstra, which could not convert any of their nine second half penalty corners, held an 11-4 advantage over St. Joseph's in that category.

Hofstra returns home for their final two Colonial Athletic Association regular season contests next weekend. The Pride will host #17 James Madison on Friday, October 28 at 3 p.m. and William and Mary on Sunday, October 30 for Senior Day at noon in games that will decide their advancement into the CAA Championship tournament.
