Hempstead, NY – Freshman
Laura Masciullo had 17 kills and 10 digs and sophomore
Michela Rucli added 15 kills and nine blocks to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a four-set win over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Fitness Center.
Hofstra improved to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win, which came in set scores of 25-14, 24-26, 25-16 and 25-7. William & Mary drops to 6-11 and 0-4 in the league.
Senior
Hannah Klemm dished out 37 assists in the match to give her 4,032 for her spectacular career. She becomes just the third player in program history to reach 4,000 career assists and only the ninth in Colonial Athletic Association history to do so.
Hofstra's strong play from Friday carried over into the match today as the Pride hit at a .500 clip in the opening stanza in easily defeating the Tribe by double digits. Masciullo (6), graduate
Semen Sen (4) and Rucli (4) led the way for Hofstra in kills.
William & Mary jumped out to 15-10 lead in the second stanza before Hofstra used a 6-1 run to knot the set at 16 after a kill from Rucli. Each team would have chances to put the set away before the Tribe eventually scored the final three points of the set to even the match at one set apiece.
Hofstra was back to its dominating self in the third set as they raced out to a big lead and never looked back in posting the nine-point victory. The defense was the key in that set as the Pride held the Tribe to a negative .029 attack percentage in taking the overall lead in the match.
The Tribe scored the first point of the fourth set but then it was all Hofstra as the Pride scored the next 10 points to take a commanding 10-1 lead following a block from sophomore
Nanishka Perez and Rucli. The Pride was never challenged the rest of the way in easily dispatching of William & Mary.
Sophomore
Luisa Domingues led the Pride with 14 digs. Sen posted six blocks, five kills and three digs in the contest.
Sydney Biniak had 15 kills, seven digs and three blocks for William & Mary, while Autumn Brenner posted 32 assists.
Hofstra is back in action on Thursday, October 6 when it hosts Towson at 7 p.m. That match will be the Pride's first of the season in the Mack Physical Education Center after playing its first six matches in the Mack Fitness Center due to the Presidential Debate at Hofstra this past Monday.
