WTEN: Hofstra Sweeps Sacred Heart And Fairfield

Fairfield CT – The Hofstra Women's Tennis team swept a pair of matches Sunday, defeating Sacred Heart and Fairfield by identical 6-1 scores. The Pride improved to 3-0 on the season with the wins. The victory over Sacred Heart was the first Hofstra win for new coach Jason Pasion.

In the opening match at Sacred Heart, the Pride won all six singles matches including three set victories by Michal Kaplan at first singles and Giulia Leone at fifth singles. Kaplan dropped the first set to Olivia Podsiebierski, 0-6, before storming back to win the next two sets 7-5 and 11-9. Leone lost her first set, 5-7, to Sabrina Lopez but won the next two by scores of 6-2 and 10-5.

Jasmine King won at second singles, 6-4, 6-2, over Brianne Lauria at second singles; Sarah Catherine Herndon posted a 6-2, 6-4, win over Taylor Gurda at the third flight. Carmen Pestano picked up a fourth flight win over Adrianne Alfonso, 6-3, 6-1, and Disha Yellayi earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles over Claudia Ruiz.

Sacred Heart took two of the three doubles matches to earn the point. Yellayi and Leone had Hofstra's lone victory with a 6-4 win over Alfonso and Ruiz.

In the second match of the day, Hofstra won the doubles point and five of six singles matches to get the win at Fairfield. Kaplan and Herndon won at second doubles, 7-5, over Jessica Pil and Emily Lombardi to give the Pride the point following a 6-2 win at third doubles by Leone and Yellayi over Shelby Vertula and Meghan Zimmer.

In singles play, Perstano's 6-3, 6-0 win over Vertula at fourth singles clinched the win for the Pride. Kaplan had a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 win over Sarah Stuhlman at the first flight, while Herndon had a 6-3, 6-0 win over Pil at the third flight. Leone posted a 6-1, 7-6 win over Lombardi at fifth singles. Tara Reutter posted an 8-5 win at sixth singles in a match that was played as an 8-game pro set due to darkness.  

The Pride returns to action at the ITA Regionals at Yale on Thursday.
