VB: Hofstra Sweeps Stony Brook For Second Straight Year

Stony Brook, NY – Junior outside hitter Veronika Kostova had a match-high 13 kills and junior setter Hannah Klemm tallied 38 assists to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Long Island rival Stony Brook on Tuesday evening at Prichard Gymnasium.

It marks the second straight year that Hofstra has swept the Seawolves in the renewal of the rivalry.

Set scores were 27-25, 25-18 and 25-20 in favor of the Pride.

The win ends a short three-match losing skid for Hofstra which improves to 5-4 this season. Stony Brook falls to 2-6.

The first two sets saw Hofstra use early runs to take commanding leads they would not relinquish. In the first stanza, the Pride used a 5-1 run to turn a 5-4 lead into a 10-5 advantage and they would go on to earn a narrow two-point victory. The second set was a more dominating effort by Hofstra as the strong serving of sophomore middle blocker Leticia Valente catapulted the Pride on a 7-0 scoring run to lead 12-3 early. Hofstra was never seriously challenged the rest of that set as they took a 2-0 lead in the contest.

Hofstra would continue its strong match in the third set as the Pride hit at a match-high .444 with 18 kills on 36 attempts with just two errors as they pulled away for the five-point win.

Valente finished with eight kills and a match-high six blocks for Hofstra. Freshman libero Luisa Domingues led the Pride with eight digs.

Hofstra returns to action this weekend when it hosts the annual Hofstra/Asics Invitational. Princeton, Florida Gulf Coast and Hartford visit Hempstead for the two-day, six-match tournament on Friday and Saturday.
