WSOC: Hofstra Opens Yale Invitational With 5-4 Double Overtime Victory

New Haven, Conn. – Senior Jeannine Molleda scored with 6:32 remaining in double overtime to lift Hofstra to a whirlwind 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs in the Yale Invitational opener on Friday night at Reese Stadium.

Sophomore Kristin Desmond capped a three-point game by assisting on Molleda' s second goal of the season in the 104th minute. The golden goal improved Hofstra's winning streak to three as the Pride improved to 3-2. Yale, which scored an 89th minute equalizer to send the game beyond regulation, fell to 0-2.

Senior defender Mallory Ullrich posted a career-high three assists. Freshman Madeline Anderson scored her first career goal and sophomores Kristin Desmond and Katie Gerdes added second-half goals. Senior forward and Pride leading scorer Leah Galton notched her fifth goal in five games this season as Hofstra scored five goals for the first time since Oct. 17, 2014 at Charleston.

Down to 10 players after Galton was given a red card in the 80th minute, Yale's Sofia Griff scored at 88:43 to send the game into overtime. But Molleda helped Hofstra overcome the man power disadvantage by taking Desmond's centering pass and pushing a left-footed shot in for the game-winner.

Kerri Cavallo scored two Yale goals and started the high-scoring contest just 58 seconds in when she finished Michelle Alozie's pass from 10 yards out.

Galton responded by scoring her fifth goal of the season in the eighth minute. The two-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year notched her 41st career goal and upped her career point total to 103 by assisting on Gerdes' goal. She trails only Sam Scolarici in both categories, needing nine more goals to tie the program's top mark and moving within striking distance of the career mark for points at 108.

Cavallo registered her second goal of the half just 2:01 before halftime. Griff set up Cavallo's second strike to put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-1, at the half. Yale started the next half the way it ended the previous when Ally Grossman put Yale ahead, 3-1, in the 49th minute.

Hofstra then scored three consecutive goals in less than 22 minutes. The Pride established a 23-10 edge in shots and a 14-6 advantage in on-target attempts. That included Desmond's 51st-minute goal for her second of the season. After spending the bulk of her freshman campaign as a defender, Desmond now has seven points in five games playing at forward.

Ullrich assisted on all three of Hofstra's second half goals, facilitating Desmond's goal before picking up her second helper on Anderson's first career goal in the 64th minute. Anderson, a defender, deflected Ullrich's corner kick in.

Galton and Ullrich set up Gerdes' goal from 8-yards out to put Hofstra ahead, 4-3, before Yale tied it late. Ullrich entered the game with two career assists in 42 games for Hofstra but notched three in one game.

Yale goalkeeper Rachel Ames finished with nine saves. Both of Gerdes' goals this season have come as a reserve.

Hofstra will resume the tournament with a 12:30 p.m. game Sunday against CCSU.
